Post Windshield

Well I made it about 6 months without anything bad happening to my BABY.
Today I came out of a store and noticed someone dented my rear bumper bummer.
Well on the way to the dealer to get an estimate a stone flew up and hit my windshield it put a dime size chip in it.
I had it repaired instead of putting in a new winshield. I hate the thought of somebody tearing out my glass and putting in a new one on a new truck.I am worried it will not be the same after install.

Cool

Mine was replaced at around 5k miles. No problems with wind noise, water or anything else. I made them put Ford OEM glass in it.
I'd take it to the shop and not have it done at your work or home.

I also just had new a new windshield put in after 87k. I requested Ford OEM glass becuase I heard that there is a big difference in the strength (cracking, chips, etc.) between this and aftermarket glass. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I used to work for an insurance company and learned more about glass than I cared too.

As far as strength goes I believe a windshield is a windshield is a windshield. The standards that the product must meet before being sold are the same across the board.

What I'm firmly convinced is different is the lifespan of the glass--specifically the safety coating. The plastic membrane on some aftermarket glass seems to 'pit' easier over time. It causes a film to form behind your wipers in the rain causing visibility to suck.

I suppose that an argument could be made for the pitting to actually degrade the strengh of the glass but I suspect the effects are negligible.

I had an aftermarket windshield put in my old ranger before I returned it to get my F150. I was really annoyed that the shading at the top was a different pattern. There definitely can be a difference in appearance between OEM and aftermarket glass. Careful!

Plus you don't that cool Ford logo shadow on the dash when the sun shines thorugh it. It would say Carlite, what the hell is a Carlite

At 5140 miles (01/15/01), a rock, the size of Rhode Island (at least it seemed that large), chipped my windshield on my 2000 Scab - had it replaced by the local chain - no problems to date - windshield is OEM.

Knock on wood but I have not had to replace my windshield. In 15 months since I bought my truck, I have had the tailgate and rear bumper repainted and in another incident, the whole rear passenger side has been repainted. Damn vandals.

The aftermarket specifications as far as cosmetic defects are relaxed compared to original quality windshields, basically if it ain't broke, they ship all aftermarket glass. The shadeband difference noted in another post probably came from an aftermarket supplier, not the original Ford glass supplier. Ford glass is now sold out to a company called Visteon (sp?). Quality specifications must be made regardless of who made the glass. ASK for OEM glass if insurance will cover it, but if you have to settle for aftermarket glass, I'd ask to inspect the windshield first, before installation, so any noted defects can be fixed first, or ask for another one.

Many states have "0 deductible" windshield glass laws.

If you chip/crack a winshield, and the vehicle is registered/insured in florida, the insurance picks up 100% of the tab, no deductible.

Hope nobody needs this info, but I have saved my frinends over $1000 from all the windshields they have gotten.

I agree with Supercrew2001red5.4. I'm more concerned about the quality of the replacement and what else they might mess up installing the new one. I have a running crack and a bullseye on my 99 Supercab. I plan to wait until the lease is almost up and replace it then.

After a little accident, I had to replace the windshield on my 99 XLT after oly 1200 miles. No problems for the next 37,000 untill I traded it in for my 01'.

It all depends on who does the work! Just find the best guy in town. (sounds easy, huh?)
