I like using products from Fuller Brush. I use their car wash, brushes, tire cleaner and protector. Does a great job. You can order online at http://www.fullerbrush.com/

Enjoy,

fsufan11, more than likely there was a sign at that car wash advising you to check the cleanlyness of the brush before using. For the rest of the board, I'll give you the proper sequence of washing at a self-serve wash. I have been in the self serve car wash "biz" for several years. Following these steps will yield the best washing results.
  • Step 1- Pre-soak, this is usually a low pressure soap that "loosens" the dirt. Apply from the bottom of the car up.
  • Step 2- High pressure soap. Use this to remove the "chunks" if you will. Do this from the top of the vehicle down.
  • Step 3 - Foam brush. ALWAYS CHECK THE BRUSH FOR CLEANLINESS, I always hit it with the high pressure soap real good. Again, brush from the top of vehicle down. Generally these brushes are made of hogs hair or a nylon material. By themselves they will not scratch your car. Its the guy that was in front of you that cleaned out the bed of his pickup and not rinsing the brush out that makes the scratches. So let me stress again ALWAYS CHECK AND RINSE THE BRUSH BEFORE USING.
  • Step 4 - High pressure rinse (self explanitary) Rinse from top down.
  • Step 5 - Spray wax. Apply spray wax from top of vehicle down.
  • Step 6 - Spot Free Rinse. No, this is not a gimmick, It is speacially treated water that is treated to remove about 98% of the minerals and other contaminants in the water. These minerals, etc. are what cause the spots.Apply liberal amounts of spot free from the top down again..
Viola!!! you have a sparkling clean truck.
Those poor foam brushes always get a bumm rap, but I wish I had a dollar for every person ive seen pull in with a filthy car and grab that brush first thing.. of course its gonna scratch. But follow that list and you'll get a nice clean "scratchless" wash.

Thanks for reading my "Carwash 101" ramblings.

I highly recommend using a prewashed cloth baby diaper when waxing your truck. It does not leave swirl marks.

If you ever take your truck to one of those drive through car washes where you wash the truck yourself, please be sure to spray off or clean the foaming brush, This weekend I washed my wife's Supercrew with one and it left several small scratches in the paint. I later looked inside one of the brushes and noticed all kind of trash(dirt, rocks, et.). My advice is a mild CAR soap and a sponge.

I use Turtle Wax "zipwax" carwash and use The Wax Shop "Super Glaze" wax and it turns out pretty nice. Instead of using a clar bar The Wax Shop has stuff called Safe Cut and it is supposed to remove contaminants from the paint.

My experience with the liquid or paste products that "cut" through and remove contaminants is they don't do a complete job and find they are frequently abrasive although they say they are not.

I agree with the post concerning using any auto wash from any store-turtle wax, meguires etc. As to the wax I started using Zymol about 2 years ago and that stuff is great. Easy to apply and remove (you do not let it dry) and the finish looks fantastic (and lasts). I know the stuff is expensive, but it works and does not leave the smeary build up that most others leave. Got the tip from the BMW dealer.
