Well I was just minding my own business driving along on the highway a good 4 or 5 car lengths behind a 18 wheeler. Out of no where this chunk of brick comes straight at my windshield, with about two seconds to think I swerved out of my lane and into the passing lane (I always check my mirrors about every 5 seconds) but I was to late. The brick had hit my truck. Not the windshield but the frame on the passengers side. I've done painting filling before but on the amature level. My question is how would I go about fixing this?

 

If it's painted and you can feel it with your fingernail you can make it look better but you are not going to fix it without spending some coin.
Should have gotten the license plate number of the truck and called them or your insurance company.

 

sorry that would get you nowhere. thats classified as a roadhazzard and there is nothing you can do about it. more of an issue of him following too closely. 4 or 5 car lengths behind is not what is classified as safe following distance. i can tell you this because someone tried this crap with me once. insurance company told him to go pound sand.

hugh as for your fix it does not appear to be dented??? you should be able to touch it up with some touch-up paint, fine sand it smooth gently, then polish it up to be barely noticable. if dented you're looking at some mud work.

 

Laws vary from state to state but I know a couple of people that have gotten new windshields because the rock came from the truck not the road.
Some states and even cities maintain a fund specifically for Road hazards. Oakland California will pay (price of a new tire) for pothole (road hazard) damage.

Closed mouths dont get fed...When you do nothing, you get nothing.
If you can prove negligence due to no or improper mudflaps, unsecured, uncovered load ect or prove the rock came from the truck (dump trucks) you may get them to pay...

Well guys I was traveling up the east coast on I-95 and was about 4 states out of mine. I think the hassle would be bigger with all the insurance companies then just fixing it myself with some sand paper, body filler and paint.

Not dented, it hit hard, shook the whole truck when it hit. It made deep scratches more like.

 

then i would try the touch up route. just make sure if there is some bare metal in the scratches the make sure it is clean and clear of rust. if not rust will pop through your work. then just lightly sand the edges of the touchup smooth with some fine sandpaper and you should be able to polish it up nicely.

 

I've had this happen to me recently too though in my case I did get some dents. What would be the easiest way to fix that? I've never used paint filler though I'm comfortable with that process. I've got everything to do that other than the color matched paint. It's the dents that bug me the most... any easy way to get those out? I can probably take a pic later this evening.
