Post 'winterization...what are you doing?'

Help me! I'm at it again, only this time I'm calling it "winterization" instead of "modification" This consisted of Polished steel fenderwell moldings, * new custom mud flaps, undercoating anything I didn't get to this summer, and sealing screw holes from the added on stuff ect. Here in MI the snow started yesterday and that was the day I finally had all the stuff I needed to do this. Even though the snow was melting as it came down, to emulate rain, it was still snow in the air and I wasn't going to let that stop me. Noooo! I just had to do it. The day before I had a "false start" as it were. That's when you start something and failing to forsee screw ups, don't get extra parts, as well as deciding to change some *parts(see above). I did accomplish one thing however, I took apart the tailgate and lilthium greased every moving part to avoid last years "frozen/stuck tailgate" problem. So I try again after buying extra extra parts. It happens MY garage is full of crap and so is my freinds, but she also has a carport, so I asked if I can come over. They (her and her sister) already suspect I'm crazy, and know to just "let me have my way" so I haul all of my tools and some of my buddys over there and in the snow/rain procede to put those Gosh-darn-things on, taking special care to follow the "mental notes" from the day before. Including 1) Use LITTLE pieces of 3M tape to hold molding while drilling instead of the whole piece. 2) Then remove, wasting only the little pieces and put big piece on running the length of the whole molding. 3) Caulk the whole edge where the drilled holes are and pull back 3" of the 3M tape backing leaving it sticking out. 4) Put on molding carefully lining up holes and then pull the tape backing tab out while pressing the molding on. Then screw in the screws. 5) Wipe off ooozing caulk BEFORE sticking your head under there to check for screw penitration.
I now have some added mental notes for the mudflap application. 1) Instead of spending three hours trying to do this without removing wheels, spend 10 minutes removing wheels. I'm glad I had enough forsight to bring my super duper scratchless clamps. 2) Clamp mud flap on 3) Drill 4) use 10mm bolt "feature" of the screws to avoid changing the drill bit while hoping flap doesn't move because of the 40mph wind! Also make sure to bring extra WARM clothing. I had to barrow Cindy's, but fortunately, wears the same kind of stuff as me when working outside.(insulated flannel over sweatshirt, what a Gal! -Available too) End result: five hours to do the drivers side rear wheel, one hour to do the passenger side rear wheel, including cleanup and putting tools away. It's now 9:00pm and I don't even know what this will look like when the sun comes up. Now I just have to do the front! I think I might give my self a couple of days to recover, however. As a final note: wait until the silicon caulk has dried before trying to remove it from hair, it will only spread it around. Lather, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat. Oh Oh, I think I just found a gray hair!
So, just what are you other Northerers doing?

For winter, well I guess will extend the vent hoses on everything, and run them in the cab for deep water crossings while hunting. Thats it. No snow down here.

A good wax job and if you don't already have one, build a garage!

Tina I too have a spare. It is a rain jacket with fleece lining, extra big so I can wear it over any clothes I have on,and it's always tucked under the seat year round. However due to the close clearance between my Truck and the side of the garage, I needed something 'soft' so as not to scratch the Truck in case I brushed up against it.

Cool

Over here in WI we get just as much salt and snow. Since I opted for the 4X2 I parked it in the garage next to my motorcycle and will drive my beater Mustang for the next few months.

Cool

What's with this weather??? I post 80 degrees and a couple of days later the bottom falls out. It must be about 36 degrees out there right now. But by the weekend it should be back up in the 70's Andthensometoo is this your fault for "winterizing" your truck??? Gee, I hope I don't have to!!

I check the tire air pressure more frequently in the winter.
I gave it a good wax job to get me through to better weather.

Oh yeah, and I put a bra on.

I'm doing the same thing as every other year. Had the truck Ziebarted when I bought it. Wash out the underside of all the accumulation. Washed and waxed the body. Change the oil, check the transmission fluid. Check the battery fluid level & condition of the cables. Check the antifreeze is good to at least -30. Insure all the lights are working properly. Get the snow tires (and winter rims) on and the bags of sand and shovel in the back of the truck. Make sure the snowblower runs and has plenty of fuel.

Now you can build the fire in the livingroom - RATS - forgot we don't have a fireplace. Guess I'll just have to pull on an extra blanket till spring finally arrives.
