To remove or not - that is the question!

If you look at my signature you can see I have some large decals on the suicide doors of my 06 Lariat Scab. They promote my hot air balloon team. But I have even larger ones on the balloon trailer, sooooo...

I'm trying to clean up the look of the truck. I have the Roush grilles, stripes and spoiler. Adding Roush wheels next week and maybe the hood scoop.

I'm tempted/planing to remove the rear door decals --- but I've seen decals like this removed from trailers and they've flat spotted - not sure that's the right term - or shadowed the paint --- in other words you can still see the shape of the decal even when removed.

I'm hoping that since modern autos have clear coat and trailers usually don't, that won't be the case. These have been on the truck a little less than 2 years.

Any ideas what will happen when I remove them? Gonna have the truck detailed next week and thought that would be the time to do it. But I don't have the $$ now to repaint the doors so if they're gonna shadow I'd just leave them....

As long as they haven't been on there for several years and you're careful removing them you shouldn't have a problem. Maybe if it sits in direct sunlight quite a bit all year. If you can get more decals then take them off, and if they ghost just put a new one on.

G'luck

I can always get new ones made - and the truck is parked in a garage when not on the road. I don't have a heat gun - will a common hair dryer on high do the trick?

It could. You could also try parking it outside for a couple hours, and try then.

Yea a hair dryer will work, heat the vynal up a little to soften it then slowly pull down...it should come right off. If there is any sort of an outline, claybar the area then give it a polish and wax. That should help it.

I'd be leery of my using a rubber wheel - I've seen them on the web and utube, but I'm a writer and graphic designer, not a mechanic or detailer. My luck, i'd erase half the paint. I'm wondering if the detail shop could just do it for me at a slight extra charge ---- or I can try the hair dryer.

Thanks for all the advice guys. The hair dryer did the trick - once i got an edge up it just peeled right off in huge pieces. Took less than 15 minutes to remove both door size decals. A fine dirt outline was left - a quick trip to the car wash got rid of most of it and what was left disappeared with a litle elbow grease and some orange oil Fantastik.

Tomorrow I get the new Roush wheels and Hankook tires mounted. Then I'll have to get some new pics to change my sig.

Again, thanks for the help!
