Repainting the underbody..

I want to repaint under my truck because it has a bit of surface rust but nothing serious. It didn't have any until my family moved from Cali to Indianapolis. It spend only a year and a half down there and wala god damn rust. What's the best way to dress it up and make it look nice?

Take the bed off. Get rid of the dirt and lose stuff. and brush on some POR 15 gloss black.

For the front just get the frame the best you can with the por.

www.porcan.com

i like to douse the front end, cross members, transfer case, tranny, all that with stuff with wd 40. makes it look new and lubes it.

You can do that OR you can do it as I did. Get a wire wheel attachment on a grinder or drill and get all the rust off, and then paint it with gloss black rustoleum. I can get you some pics if you like.

Por15 last longer, bust costs WAAAAY more than a can of Rustoleum. As long as you get of as much rust as possible, the spray can will do the trick and will last quite sometime. Also, no need to take off the bed. That's just way more hassle than you need.

Use a wire brush and scrap off all the rust you can. Wash it and let it fully dry. Use a can of Rustoleum and you'll be looking brand new under there in no time.

I sprayed my axle with flat black Rustoleum. Not because it was rusty, but because I didn't really like the factory finish they applied. I did not remove a single thing. Just taped up a few parts and it came out perfect.

yeah por 15 all you gotta do is remove loose stuff. it bonds to the rust really good. i know people you did no prep at all and it looks exactly the same as when they put it on 10 years ago.

and removing the bed makes it a lot more enjoyable and easier if you can.

That paint job looks pretty good. I was thinking rusto but that por sounds like a good idea. How much does it run and how much you think I would need. I don't have the equip to take off the bed though I wish I did. What would be a good alternative?

Here's my under body.

ooh that looks kinda rough but salvageable.

alright the best option for you would be to order some POR 15 from http://www.porcan.com/usa/preventrustpaint.asp (cheapest price ive found)

you will need a quart and it will cost $40 but it is well worth it. i mean do you want to rustoleum it and last a couple years or POR 15 it and last decades.

i would put your truck up on some jack stands. then i would get all the lose stuff off of the frame and everything first and then start brushing away. there is really no prep needed but you can get some metal etching primer if you desire.

Also, not to derail the thread. Just checked your gallery, nice truck. Please, please don't waste your money on the throttle body spacer. Anyone will ell you they do absolutely nothing. Anyway, just wanted to let you know before you waste cash.

Back to the thread. Sounds like POR is the best option for you. Good luck and please post pics of how it turns out. I'd like to see.
