What makes tires brown ?

All this time I was thinking it was a combination of tire shine products, mixed with road grime (which is rediculously greasy, grimy, gummy $#!+ to remove)

But then it dawned on me... the little tires on my boat trailer, had gotten REALLY ugly brown, even though they had never seen tire shine products, until recently. They were just kind of "flat" brown. Tire shine made them black again.... but now they will probably be all gummy and effed up if I keep using the tire shine

Keeping these tires clean, and black, is just getting to be more of a PITA than the whole rest of the truck combined !

Hmmm,
Fish

PS, Figuring out the Ice trick on my Satin Black wheels, just makes the tires look even worse.... because you have "actual black" right there to compare it too

your krazy fish

but I think its the rubber it self turning brown.. Ive seen RV's with wheel covers on to protect the tire from the sun.. where the tire toches the cover will turn brown after a couple of years...

Why are your overlays that color JK

01, why thank you

Great link Johnny. One page led to another, and I found this;

http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/detail.jsp?ID=85

Anybody ever use this stuff ?

I've tried scrubbing, with soap, degreasers, etc.... until I wore myself out, and my tires were still not completely clean.

Peace,
Fish

Westley's Bleach White is a quick and very effective cleaner.

when using meguiars m40 rubber cleaner or westleys bleach white do you use a dressing as i have yet to find a decent dressing that does not end on the side of the truck any suggestions .

And not to distract from jetech's question.....

But my concern about Meguiars rubber cleaner, or especially Wesly's Bleach White, is > I'm totally paranoid about getting it on the Satin Black powder coating of my wheels ! (which I don't see how to avoid)
Last thing I want to do is to screw up my wheels, while just trying to clean the tires

Peace,
Fish

I was offering up my opinion, but I'm not sure how Westley's would react with the powdercoat. I'd hold off on that until I could find something else to try it on or someone with knowledge of powdercoat and tire cleaners.

Wet your wheels down first, then use a good tire cleaner. I have done this with painted, chrome and polished wheels without a problem.

I used westley's bleach white and all sorts of tire foams on my BFGs when I had powder coated black steel wheels on my ranger, never had an issue because I found no reason to believe that any of those products would create a problem. Why do you think they will screw up the finish on your wheels?

Westley's is very caustic. You have to use it carefully and rinse it off anything you spray it on other than the tire quickly.

I think it goes without saying that you need to rinse it off well since your using bleach, if you have a problem keeping it on the tires then it's an excuse to get some bigger meats so you have more sidewall to play with

I rinse off the tire first then spray it pretty generously with bleach white, then just go over it with a scrub brush and rinse.
