Chrome Emblems
Chrome Emblems
Rather than buying brand new emblems for my truck, I went to discount auto and picked up some Aircraft Stripper. I removed my emblems, sprayed them, then took a rag and wiped them off. They came out nice. Anybody else done this?
Haven't heard of it done like that, but sounds like a good idea! The way I heard of doing this was using acetone on them while they were still on the truck. You have to mask everything up around it though of course. Pics?
i can put some pics up tommorow morning. The rear emblem has 2 rivets, pull on each side. Then, you have to carefully get them off the double sided tape. Spray 'em. But be careful with the Aircraft Stripper, it's quite dangerous. Scrape the old tape off and apply some new stuff. Re-apply the emblem
i acetoned mine while they were on my truck. its no big deal. just make sure you tape around the emblem real good. i used blue painters tape.
and i used cotton ***** and Q-tips to strip the emblem.

did the black come off fairly easy? and can i just pick up some acetone say at lowes or someplace like that?
Acetone won't hurt your paint, will however remove any wax that's been applied to the paint. You can pickup acetone at lowe's, menards, any bodyshop supply store, and just about anyplace that has a paint dept.
Never heard of using Aircraft stripper on chrome to clean. Personally I would be hesitant to do, that stuff will strip paint in 30sec. flat. That stuff also contains Methylene Chloride which is extremely volatile. Make sure you wear protective clothing when handling that stuff especially gloves and not your typical latex rubber gloves either. You need Nitrile painters gloves it will go through latex gloves and that stuff will burn on contact.

looks nice bro. yea, aircraft stripper is extremely dangerous, but i think it works better. You just have to be careful not to ruin your skin or your truck. They both do basically the same thing to these emblems, it's just that aircraft stripper is easier & more effective in my opinion
I have used waxed dental floss with good results. Pull out a couple of feet, wrap around each index finger, let it slide undrerneath molding and then with a sawing motion bring floss toward you. On long moldings I do it about half way down and then start from the other side, to avoid breaking the molding. You may have to use several pieces of floss. I spray any excess adhesive with WD-40 and let set for about 5 minutes, adhesive comes right off.
