paint is chipping

On the roof of my truck there are deep ridges on the sides (deeper than ones in the center) i own a 2003 f150. anyway the paint is chipping just in the deep ridges. i dont want to take it for a paint job because, im 19 and dont have a whole lot of money. what does you guys think would be a cheap and reliable fix would be.

Is it chipping down to the primer or down to the metal?

My 2001 had one tiny spot where this was occuring in the rain gutters... I traded it before it made it got too bad... I've heard others talk about this being a problem area as well. In my case, it was a classic example of solvent pop and/or poorly prepped metal.

The key here is to keep it from going any farther, if possible. There is a chemical out there called Por-15 that is a rust inhibitor. Not sure how big of a spot that we're talking about here but, it may be worth utilizing it if it's a large enough spot. If it's not, several coats of touch-up paint in the area will create a water tight seal and thus, keep the rust from going farther.

How big of a spot are we talking about, King?

Ack. That's way more than what I had figured.

Are you certain that the vehicle has never been sprayed? It looks to me like there was likely still some contamination down the edge of that gutter when it made it in to the paint booth.

I'm not sure that a touch up paint procedure is going to help...

There are some guys here that are extensively versed in true body work... I think you're going to need someone like that to chime in... I'll watch this one as I'm interested in learning about what a fix for something like that would take...

Sorry I can't help more...

Well this could be a bigger problem than i thought too. I was wanting to just sand the rust away and put paint over it or some sort of rust stopper type thing. lol

Check out that POR-15 chemical that I mentioned on the rust preventer... also, EASTWOOD would be a place that I would check for this type of a chemical...

Best of luck, man. I wish I could offer more... I just don't know what else to say.

Tape and mask off the roof except for the channels - then sand the channels and hit them with POR-15. Then you can get an exact color touchup in a rattle can. The touchup won't be that noticeable.
