Protecting Clearcoat

Slightly off topic but the question is about protecting the clear coat. Also people here tend to have some great ideas that I trust.

I'm going to be mounting a bike rack on my "vehicle" and want to protect the clear coat from the rubber "feet". Would anyone be able to recommend something to put between the two? It would need to mount on the rubber feet. The important part is that it needs to be easy to clean so that it does not rub sand/dirt against the paint. It will remain dry so that is not an issue.

So far I was thinking about cork board. What about cutting up an old bike inner tube to use the rubber? Other ideas? Or would you avoid either of these two for a certain reason?

Again, I'm looking for ideas on how to protect the clear coat. Thanks!

First off, that is NOT off topic-- you came to the right place

What kind of vehicle is it? Did you already buy the rack? How do you feel about installing a mini hitch so you can have it not touch the paint at all???

Couple of odd questions for you:
Do you wax your bike? (I wax all 3 of mine, plus the other 6 that live in my house... 3 people, 9 bikes... Its sick. I know)
Are you LDS by chance? I only ask b/c you are in Salt Lake City, bike rack, that kind of thing... FWIW, by best friend is LDS, so I am by no means trying to say anything.... just curious...

See... don't make me say what kind of vehicle it is... otherwise you will see that it's off topic! (let's just say it's a Ford... but it's smaller then my F150)

No problem... I don't wax it as it's a mountain bike. But I do clean it each time it comes back from the mountain. If I were RR, I'd probably hose it down with APC.

Not LDS (moved here from Florida). But I love the history of the church and area (am agnostic).

I wax both mountain bikes I have... They clean up VERY easily when you do... Plus, since I am about to be in Seattle, I am trying to do EVERYTHING to prevent rust I can...
