First time detailing, hows this plan of action?

Well...I've been reading a lot and I think I've come up with a decent plan of action to detail my truck for the first time.

-Megs Gold Class Shampoo
-Megs Clay Kit
-ColorX
-Megs NXT or Turtle Wax ICE
-Megs Caranuba?

My truck is the dreaded color black, but I want to try and keep this pretty simple. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? I've seen the ColorX acts as a cleaner and wax, but will it act as my polisher as well? I also need to go out and get wash mits and such, so i'll probably go hit up Big Lots for the Turtle Wax sheeps wool mit i saw you guys talking about haha, but is there anything else i should grab? Are chamois that good for drying, or should i try something else? MF is my best bet for applicators for the ColorX and wax right? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Cody

They might have some TW foam applicators for 40 cents at Big Lots you might use for wax.

I'm not expert by any means, and I'll probably get corrected for this, but maybe get some #9 instead of the ColorX? #9 is a polish with fillers, right?

For doing it by hand with stuff that you can find easily, ColorX is an excellent choice.

No chamois, get a microfiber drying towel of some sort and don't rub - just blot with it.

NXT comes with a foam applicator in the box, and is the best type for LSP's. You can use a MF for the ColorX.

You will need some good MF's for product removal.

NXT 2.0 is excellent - it has some fillers and protects very well. Pure carnauba on top will make the black pop much better.

Pick up some #26...

When i get around too it, my ADS order just got here and i'll be doing the following.

Wash with foam gun and Meg's Super Soak
Clay [Done 3 months ago, i may skip]
ScratchX on spots.
Meguires #9 to remove some swirls
Meguires Hand Polish ((Any pro's have knowledge on this?))
NXT 2.0-Let cure 12 hrs
Meguires #26 to top over NXT. This enhances shine, depth and wetness. Especially on darker colors!

Along with
Hyperdressing on allll trim and tires.
Eagle One Metal Polish, followed by NXT 2.0 on rims, bumpers, step bars, and tailpipes.

Hope that helps, just wanted to share what i'm doing soon as well!

Thanks for the help guys. I was wondering, I see a lot of people just claying their hood and roof, since i've never clayed my truck before, should i just go ahead and do the whole thing?

Also, whats the difference between scratch X and color X? Some say that ones a cleaner and ones a wax/polisher, while i've seen others say neither is a polisher and one is just a more powerful cleaner over the other...so i'm sort of confused.

Thanks again

Scratch X isn't meant for the entire vehicle. Just problem spots. That's as far as my knowledge goes. I don't know much about ColorX.

On a side note, how do you like your subs? I've been looking into that set up (and a seat lift) on my Screw.

They're pretty good. Honestly I think they'd sound much better if the box was vented or built by someone with a little more experience, but i just built it making sure they had enough air space. But..because of the airspace and how deep the magnets are, the seat had to be lifted almost 4 inches, so it doesn't look HORRIBLE, but its a bit exagerated (sp?). I'm sure you could fine more creative ways to fit them in a screw though. I got a deal on mine though, both brand new 2ohm for only 125. If you have the money, I'd say shop around, look maybe for some better SQ subs that still hit, but if you want some boom with a bit of SQ, they're pretty good for that for their price. Keep in mind though, i have no idea how to tune to good frequencies w/ my amp and such, so that might be half my problem..

you need subs? How about a set of EarthQuake SWS 10's?

ColorX is a cleaner wax - nothing will really do a good job of defect correction by hand, but ColorX is one of the better products for that use. What defects and swirls it does leave, the NXT will help fill.

For a pure carnauba to top the NXT with, the Megs Gold Class is a good choice for something available everywhere. #26 is more of a professional product. NXT should be allowed to "cure" for 12 hours before topping.

Yes, you should clay the whole vehicle.

went out and got my stuff for tomorrows detail job. Man, just about everything is 3 dollars cheaper at Wal-Mart. But, they ran out of the Meguiars clay kit so i grabbed the Mothers Clay kit, came with 1 big bar instead of 2 smaller ones. Will this change anything since its not meguiars and the rest of my stuff is?

Also, i heard the hot tire shine meguiars makes is good for detailing plastics and trim, anyone tried this?

Oh one more thing..I was looking for caranuba wax to put on saturday on top of the tech wax, but all of it said caranuba cleaner wax, is this the same stuff?

Thanks

Cody

Brand of clay doesn't make a difference. You will want to break the big bar into pieces - don't use the whole thing.

Hot Shine is too messy and sticky for trim.

Nope, cleaner wax will remove the NXT. You need pure carnauba. Look for Megs Gold Class or Megs #26.

Yep. Order some Hyperdressing or a specific trim detailing product for the trim. Hotshine attracts dust and is very messy.

If your plastics and trim are in good shape to begin with, plain old quick detailer is a lot better than nothing.

Or use the Megs NXT Gen. interior detailer. Not messy/sticky, and dries quickly while leaving a nice "wet" shine. Smells good too!
