Taking Pics of your trucks ?
I guess this really goes here in this section as of of us take pics after detailing. I am wondering what setting most of you use on your digital cameras to get your good pics ? I have a high end Canon S3IS camera and cannot seem to get as good pics I as see most member get here.
Truck just looks dull even after a detailing. Was just wondering do most of you just use auto ? or Potrait mode ?
Thanks

Sony DSC-W55 Manual setting. Lighting is key. If your brave enough take a shot of the hood with the sun shining right on it. I had a problem showing swirl marks on the camera till I got the sun at just the right angle!
Hope that helps. After all it's digital, take a bunch, delete the bad ones.

Aside from lighting, the angle is the most important thing...
Google search some photography of cars tips/tricks... It typically dies well. Also, google search car images and note the angles that the better pics were taken from and the angle the lighting hits it...
The camera will make virtually no difference.
You can shoot this auto or manual-- I have done both, and both work fine...

I have a Canon A620 (point and shoot), and I just leave it on the Auto setting. The only time I change to manual is if I am trying to picture something like fire, etc. On point and shoot cameras, the factory modes (auto) are usually best unless you really know how to tweak the settings.
I use a FujiFilm S9000 Normally leave it on Automatic. On occations I'll take one with and without flash. Sometimes it does better with and sometimes without. I'm not really advanced enough to start messing with manual stuff.
I have a Kodak Z712 IS. I pretty much leave it in auto unless I want to stop it from flashing. I didn't know when I took the first pictures of my truck but later learned, that by accident I hand done them correctly.
By that I mean take your picture in the middle of the day (bright sun shine) but have you truck in a shaded area. That way even thing around the truck will be brighter than the truck it's self. Great way to get reflection shots like this.

Then for a direct sun light shot try placing something close to where the sun is reflecting and get a shot like this. The hood actually looks better in person than the picture.

I really need a polarized filter for this shot and it would be much better. A good friend told me that one after looking at the picture.
Hope this helps you,
Tic

Nikon D40X with the "factory" lense. The only other lense I've got is a Sigma Wide Angle Lense which does nothing good for taking pictures of vehicles. I usually use Auto. Time of day, lighting, and angle makes the difference in photography. Usually the idea is to shoot with the sun at your back as well, most of the time it works but sometimes you need something a little different. So don't always use that rule of thumb. Also, take LOTS of pictures. I usually take about 150 pictures in a "photoshoot" of my car and than just come back and label the ones I want and delete the extras. A lot of photography is practice so just take a lot of photos and see what works for you. Here are a few examples of some good photos I've taken, IMO.
Granted this isn't a nice setting or anything, just my driveway. Car placement was good, IMO, and the lighting was perfect.

Here's a good photo with a nice back drop. Lighting was pretty good, it could of been a little later in the day but it works. Once again the car placement was good IMO.

Here's one I just took of my new locking gas cap. I think the angle that I took the photo makes the photo great. Nothing special about shooting straight onto it but since I've got the door out of focus, the gas cap in focus, I think it makes a good looking photo.

I appreciate that. I spent $16,000 mods in my 2006 F150 so I'm trying to not dump so much money into this car. I think I'm going to do headers and gears and be done with it for a while. I'd love to have a GT500 but they are a little pricey. They respond so well to mods. Justin at VMP Tuning has a GT500 that's got 700+ rwhp. I'd rather have a Saleen Extreme though.
Amen on it being pricey. I bought my truck b/c I have toys (2 atv's and a motorcycle) If it wasnt for them I would try my damnest to get one but with two other cars and the truck it is impossible right now.
I use a Nikon D50.. I really don't like it. For one, it needs a cleaning and I'm too lazy to go get it cleaned. Secondly, it's really not that great with still/close-up photography. The lens on it is horrible.
I put it on manual for most of my shots and use experience/intuition to get the settings right. When I'm feeling lazy I stick it on auto to see what the camera picks and go from there on manual.
Good photos are like real estate "Location, location, location."
