Is this stuff worth buying?

A co-worker of mine says that ArmorAll Wax-It-Dry Gel in red container is one of the best things he has purchased to use on his truck. He said he doesn't have to tape as the trim shines up also. After reading quite a few of your threads, I didn't see anyone mentioning any ArmorAll products.

There's kind of a good reason for that...

Generally speaking, they're kind of a lower end product that is designed for the 'short cutter' in mind - especially the wax as you dry types of products.

The long and short of it is that 99.9999% of the 'wax as you dry' types of products out there are lousy at best. While one could feasibly use this type of product for a 'get me by' type of product, the bottom line is that the protection will be lackluster, the application process puts you in a position to severely contaminate the vehicle (dragging dirt and stuff across the paint during the application while drying) and will only yield marginally comprable results versus a true 'wax' being applied to the paint with proper procedure.

It is your truck -- not mine -- but, I wouldn't even bother. Also, I believe that many of the 'mart' stores have already pulled the product off of the shelf as it wasn't selling.

RP,

I knew I could count on you for a sensible reply and good info on exactly what the ArmorAll stuff is all about. Don't worry, it won't touch my truck!

Glad to help. Armor All doesn't make absolute crap but, I think that they've struggled to even stay afloat with the deluge of other consumer products that are on the shelves at the 'mart' stores that they depend upon to push their products.

Armor All kind of did it to themselves in that they never really came to the plate and improved their products until copious amounts of folks really gave them a black eye with their flagship product - protectant - causing dash cracking on the old school vinyl-coated foam style dashes (old skewl!). The high VOC content that was being used as a delivery agent for their silicones is what was causing that problem.

Obviously, since then, they have changed formulations (because of the problems as well as environmental regulations) and they don't suffer as badly but, since that point in time it seems that much of their reputation was ruined.

As tight knit as the car loving 'motor heads' of this world really are - once you've lost your reputation, it's REALLY tough to regain it.

Yeah, it turns out Armor All products contained a lot of alcohol in them which caused the dashes to dry out and crack in the sun.

They have improved their products, but will never elevate themselves above the Wal-Mart of vehicle care products. I will never purchase anything they put their name on. I am a diehard Meguiar's fan (Professional Series). Yes, there are some better products out there but the cost vs. benefit doesn't really agree with my wallet IMHO.
