Hints for a Detailling newb

I bought my 07 FX4 in jan and in march I used the Meg 3 step detailing system( or whatever) that came in like 3 different bottles. I wasn't overly happy with it and after reading through some of these posts and seeing pics I am amazed with the finished product that you guys have. I want to start using the more professional products by megs because I want mine to look as sweet as you guys. When I first used the "3 step" system back in march I couldn't find a Porter cable buffer to apply the stuff. So I went to Harbor freight and found a 7 in buffer (Chicago something) that supposedly had varible speeds. I have a few questions for you guys.

After looking at some of the threads I decided I wanted to go with some kind of clay, #9, #80, #21 and/ or #26. What kind of pads do I need to purchase for my 7 in buffer for each of the #'s? Also do I need a bonnet on top of those pads? When I used the bonnets I bought back in march, white cotton pieces came off and went into the paint, then i had to run my fingernail across to get the sh#& out.

Also, at the rear of the truck, right above the tailights on the corners, it appears that my paint might be starting to fade. What can I use to fix that? Other than that the only inperfections I see are small water spots on the hood. Would you guys suggest the products I mentioned above or something else? I know this is throwing alot out there but your help will be much appreciated.

The words Buffer and Detailing Newbie don't really go hand n' hand. I'd suggest you return it and pick up a DA/PC if you want to do it with a machine. Check out www.autodetailingsolutions.com for prices. I buy all of my stuff from them including my DA/PC, they are fool proof. The order seems pretty good to me. #26 looks amazing on dark colored vehicles. . like I said I'd pick up one of the DA/PCs. Apply it with the machine and buff off by hand.

Let me guess, Chicago Electric, http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92623 Thats a rotary. If you havent used a Porter Cable before, then you shouldnt be using a rotary. You dont need to return it, but you need to buy a orbital polisher like the PC 7424, or Ultimate Detailing Machine.

Now, once you get that, heres what I suggest.

Lake Country CCS 6.5" pads and 4" pads. 5" backing plate and 3.5" backing plate. This will work for your rotary too.

You shouldnt need anything aggressive for clay. Mothers, Pinnacle Poly, or Sonus green would work well for you.

Sounds to me like you're pretty set on Meguiars polish. But Im going to recommend you try something else. Menzerna Super Intensive Polish PO83Q, and Nano Polish 106FF. Both work well with rotaries and the 7424. I bet you'll only need the 106FF with the LC orange pad for your truck since its new. After you finish that up, wipe the car down with isopropyl alcohol (CVS) and water, 50/ 50 mix. Then put on your choice of sealant. Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant, Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection, Chemical Guys Jetseal, DP Sealant, etc., etc. Wait for the sealant to cure (12- 24 hours), then apply your wax. I highly recommend Pinnacle Signature Series II.

A great cheaper alternative to Menzerna polishes is Optimum, Poorboys, and Pinnacle XMT. Might also want to check out Optimum Poli- Seal.

Here are some nice kits.

And forget about the bonnets.

If you can wait a week, I will have the detailing sticky complete, after much anticipation. (FINALLY!!!) If not, email me, and I will send you the near-complete product, b/c what is missing is WAY above the level you are looking at right now...

With an 07 your paint should be in great condition and you are doing the right thing by taking care of it properly early in ownership. I must warn you grasshopper, you are about to dive in a new area that can become very addictive and expensive. However the results will make it priceless. Pardon the overly used cheesy quote.

I have that availible, too. Just send $$$ and call me, and I will read it off to you!!!

Why not print it, then read as you drive???? Some of the best reading I have done was on the highway, and my brother (a 2LT in the Army) LOVED to type his papers while he drove around (for ROTC before commissioning)...
