I've made a purchase of the 7424 6" PC DA. On the counter balance it says use a 5" pad only. I don't get it as all 7424's come with the 6" polishing pad. I'd like to be able to use 6" pads. So I suppose now I need the 6" counter balance?

 

Nah... you can use the 6" pads with it. No problem.

In most detailing circles, it's a personal preference on feel of the machine while operating on if I use one or the other.

No 8" pads!

I've been reading some on Autopia. They have a good chapter on how to use the PC.

Here's what the fella had to say about counter weights/backing plates/pads.

"In general, the 5-inch counterweight should be used with a 5-inch or smaller backing plate, whereas the 6-inch counterweight must be used with a backing plate larger than 5 inches. "Weight is the true determining factor for the proper counterweight, not the backing plate or pad size.

"While on the subject of weight and counterweight, the lighter the backing plate and pad combination the more efficient the machine will be. "I have concluded that a light weight, 5-inch, flexible backing plate used in conjunction with a 6- to 7-inch pad achieves the best results. Larger backing plates and pads apply too much torque on the motor and rob efficiency."

 

Like you're seeing... it's an individual preference. Very subjective.

 

It's just a tad bit hard for me to be subjective. I've never used a DA before. I have no idea what to expect other than what I read.
