It works good on the plastic parts but it also attracts dust like a magnet.

I would start by cleaning the engine w/ p21s total auto wash. Spray that on the engine, agitate w/ a soft bristled brush, then rinse off. Thats how I clean my engine and it works extremely well. Follow it up with poorboys trim shine Let me know if I can help some more.

This may sound dumb, but on older cars there was a chance of the engine not starting sometimes after washing the engine. I assume these engines are immune to this sort of thing now?

Try Formula 303 vinyl protectant. You can find it at most boat shops.
Great for the tires, interior, even engine.
Clean engine real good (always cold). Then dry by running engine.
Spray a light coat on engine area, don't worry with the warmth of the engine it will spread. It will dry with out being greasy and makes wash off very easy each time. Apply every 6 months or so and you got it.
When you do the interior it will take 2 coats. It will look like it's streaking but after the second coat it will all blend. Again once every 6 months.
It averages about 15 buck for 12 oz's but it goes a long way.
TIP; Use an old athletic sock to apply it.
They also have a fabric protector that is great for the carpet and cloth seats.
These are marine application products. They are meant to work. Not that water down crap.
