Today's Detail - Volvo S60 2.4T - 56k Beware!
Snagged a new client today through some word of mouth advertising from another client...
Today's vehicle was a Volvo S60 2.4T... I typically don't take any pictures of client vehicles but, I was bored today and had a little bit of time before the client was going to be there for delivery so, I grabbed my Cannon digital and snapped a few... Sorry, I do not have before pics... https://www.f150online.com/galleries...874-170862.jpg https://www.f150online.com/galleries...874-170859.jpg https://www.f150online.com/galleries...874-170860.jpg https://www.f150online.com/galleries...874-170855.jpg -----CONTINUED------- |

THE STORY:
I believe that this Volvo is a 2003 model. 32K on the odo. To my knowledge, it has NOT been detailed since they purchased. Based on the fact that I burned through a FULL clay bar on this detail, I believe that's true. The paint, upon arrival, didn't look that bad at all. Very light swirls -- honestly, I thought it was going to be a cake walk. Then I started claying... No doubt, this person works beside a foundry or by the airport (she's actually a nurse practitioner). I later discovered that it's been in the body shop a few times (this was primarily overspray). It was washed with Shampoo Plus and then...I clayed... I clayed... I clayed some more... I clayed... and I clayed. Finally, after about 2 hours of claying this beast and using several plastic razor blades to remove road paint, I had it where I wanted it. I taped it off using 3M Painters Tape (yes, the blue stuff). This thing has more plastic on it than should be allowed by law. It was a monster to tape but, definitely worth it. I started with the PC and #80 Hand Glaze to remove some of the very light swirling on a finishing pad (yes, finishing -- the swirls were VERY light and I didn't want to go too aggressive). While using the #80, I noted a few bird bomb spots as well as a scuff or two in the paint from paint transfer (door dings). For this, I pulled out a dab or two of #83 on a foam applicator and worked them by hand. This was remarkably effective and took care of it in short order. I did, however, induce some scuffing by getting overly aggressive on those spots. As such, I went back over them with #80 and took care of it.. MPPP was the next step by the PC. Then the 3M Perfect-It Show Car Wax by hand (I really liked this stuff -- first time using it today). All products were removed by hand. Finally, I went with FK1's #425 Poly Slick as the very last step right before they arrived. MPPP and FK1 were used on the wheels... Wheels/wells/tires were taken care of earlier - prior to wax. Hyper Dressing was utilized in the wells and on the tires. 1:1 ratio. Also, the engine compartment was cleaned with Simple Green and Citri-Gel. Engine Kote was utilized to dress -- no water was used to clean the compartment. Again, the interior was done before wax/polish. It was in great shape. Very little work to do. A quick vac... I dealt with some stain spots on the mats... some QDI, glass, and a quick clean and condition on the leather and it was done. The interior wasn't a problem in the least. This person was obviously very particular about their interior. Beyond the chemicals -- had a unique situation with this vehicle... it had a flat. Being that I wanted to make a very good impression, I called the owner and offered to take it up to the local shop to have it fixed. She agreed and tripped over herself thanking me. Unfortunately though, upon arrival at the shop (and after changing the damn tire to the donut), they couldn't fix it. It appeared that the side beed on the tire was ripped and wouldn't hold air... so, I delivered this vehicle with a donut on the vehicle -- for those of you wondering, yes, I dressed the donut. It was shiny and slick. LOL! By going the extra mile for this client, I scored a nice tip. Unfortunately for her, she's going to have to buy a Pirelli low-profile tire for her vehicle on Monday -- along with having her lugnuts replaced under warranty -- just look at those things! Not positive here but, she has a 'guy' clean her vehicle in the parking lot at the hospital. My hunch is that HIGH-ACID cleaner has been used there and it totally zapped the lugs. Not sure about that but, I know they were in BAD shape upon arrival. Thoughts/Comments/Questions are appreciated! Hope you enjoyed! -RP- |
looks good!!!!!

RP, Awesome Job....
Cool that you tried to take care of the tire for her.... most would blast a little air in it and roll on..... You're the MAN.... :bows: 3M Perfect-It Show Car Wax by hand (I really liked this stuff -- first time using it today). |

You're the MAN.... :bows: Unfortunately, when moving the car into position to be washed, I could tell that the air had since let go. Even worse, I couldn't just hit it with some air because the beed on the sidewall of the tire wouldn't seal to the rim -- there was a chunk missing out of it (theory is that she hit something and pinched it). Those dang lugs were REALLLY on there too... I had to fetch a cheater bar to break two of those little boogers. So, for all of you guys wondering why the photos were only taken from one side of the car... that's because I didn't want to scurry the pictures with a donut. LOL! RP :D |

Not enough work done with it as of yet... hard to say. I definitely liked it though... I think it's a discontinued product from 3M though... lol. I always find the ones that they're not going to make any longer and, for some reason, like them. The good thing, it appears that it's available out there -- and I know that my local NAPA still has 3 tins of it that I may go buy tomorrow.... Especially considering that they're sitting on the 50% off table. ;) |
rockpick, what do you do exactly? I have been wondering why and how you know so much great info about detailing!!!!
Anyways, thinks for your advice.....also i know how you feel with the claying. I clayed a 1998 buick lesabre with 65000ish miles today. it has never been clayed before....talk about a pain to learn how to clay on |

I primarily deal with soil and groundwater contamination... gas stations, factories, etc...that's my speciality area I suppose... As for detailing... it was a hobby that got WAY out of hand... ;) |
I can understand not wanting the donut in the pics, but I'll bet its a clean and shinning donut....
BTW, I may ride by NAPA tomorrow to see if its discounted around here... |

Wheels/wells/tires were taken care of earlier Can you give us a quick lesson?... Tips or tricks? Thanks. PS: I have a bottle of "Perfect-it" sitting on shelf, but have only used it as a spot fix for areas that need an aggressive polishing (small areas, by hand). Is this a new 3M product that you are using?... My bottle must be at least 5 years old. BTW, great job on the Volvo... That blue is a very attractive shade. |
Looks good RP. I want an S40 really bad.

Very very nice RP.
