On my quarter panel you can see these little white lines under the clear coat. You can not feel them. Are these cracks under the clear coat? What causes them?

Probably the phantom 'solvent pop' or 'alligatoring'.

I was talking to a P&B guy about this exact thing about two weeks ago. Basically, it's a manufacturing blemish. The basecoat or color coat is applied and not enough time is given in the cure process before a clear coat is applied. In short, a tiny 'bubble' of solven may become entrapped and 'pop' when heated to a certain degree.

He mentioned that you won't really see this on a new vehicle on the lot but rather it'll appear after a few months in the heat/sun.

The only fix, according to him, is a total strip and respray.

How bad is your problem?

 

Not bad on my truck. It is a quarter panel that was repainted at once. My moms hood on her Honda is worse. I just wanted to make sure I didn't cause it with the DA. Could the DA cause enough heat to cause it?

Highly unlikely. In fact, nearly impossible I would suspect.

I'm not a body man or a painter but, knowing the capabilities of a DA, you're fine...
