New car question

My friend just bought a new Monte Carlo SS and got some 300 dollar paint protection applied to it by the dealership. It just looks like some type of wax to me or something of the sorts. Does anyone know what this protectant might be? Is it worth the money? If it is worth anything can you do this to a car that is a year or two old? Thanks all. - Chad

I'd say your freind is out $300... I guess there might be some good to a dealer installed "protection" package, but I'd rather spend that money on detailing supplies that will last you a couple of years.

Were it my car, I'd take it out to the driveway on the first cool morning, and start from the ground up.

Dawn wash
Claybar
Polish
Wax (or two)
Interior
Glass
Chrome

Might even be enough left out of the $300 that you could purchase a Porter Cable, and make it easy on yourself.

99 percent of the dealer protection packages are straight profit items. Probably a waste of $.
