How good are the paintless dent repair guys?

I got my frist ding yesterday in the passenger rear door! some a-hole opened up his door on me in a parking lot.

the ding is abouta penny round, by about 1/8 inch dent (the guys had to have hit it pretty hard. The paint did not chip or flack off, but there is very small scrape which I think I will be able to buff off.

I got an estimate yesterday from a body shop of almost 300 bucks! I said no to them and talked to a freind of mine who gave me a buisness card of a moble paintless dent repair guy. I called him up, he said he will come to the house and charge only 75 bucks to fix the ding! hmm 75 bucks vs 300 bucks? which one am I going to choose!?? lol

How good are these guys and do they have to get into the door panel to work the dent out or do they do it all by the outside of the truck? The guys coming Wednesday morning, but I'm still very upset that someone has no respect for anyone elses property like a car or truck that they slam there doors into! God I hate people like that!

I know some of the guys around me do a really good job and depending on the dent they use dry ice to pull it out but they say they have to be carefull not to burn the paint also. Good luck in what ever way you go!

The paintless dent repair guys usually do an excellent job. If I were you, I would ask the paintless guyhow good he can make it look (i.e. sometimes, depending on the dent, the paintless guys will only guarantee a 90% fix). If he says he can make it look like new go for it, but otherwise, you may want to pay the extra $$$ to get it fixed so that you don't notice it everytime you look at youor truck. Paintless is typically the way to go for door dings though.

I had a lot of hail damage on an 02 Silverado. The insurance company said that if I took it to a particular shop and they did the paintless repair, they would waive the $500 deductable. I did and was totally satisfied, you could not see one spot. The key is that the paint surface can't be broken, or it will show. If it is a chip, it will still show, if just a scuff, may buff out.

good to read all this about PDR guys! For 75 bucks I will give them a shot!

the body shop that wanted to charge me almost 300 bucks wanted to sand down the door, drill into the ding and pop it out that way, then re-paint the entire door! That guy was crazy!

You know I got one of those dent wizard things. You see it on TV that has those little suction cups things! I use that and it works pretty good. Try one of those or pay the $75, screw the body shop!

The PDR guys are, typically, very good. They will falter when the metal has been stretched because of the impact from whatever hit you...

Case in point, my dad's 03' Lariat took a baseball to the roof. After boiling over it, he opted to give the PDR a shot. $150 later, you can barely tell it was there... the only reason you can tell is, for one, I know where it hit and, for two, the PDR guy said he wasn't able to get it all because of the metal stretch due to the impact...

Like you said, for $75, I'd give it a whirl... Everyone I've talked to say that they can work voodoo.

Thanks for the info RP. If this PDR guy does in fact repair this ding, does this weeken the metal where the ding was (from first being pushed in, now being pushed back out?) If I were to put pressure on the spot the ding was at, that spot wouldn't pop back into a ding again would it or is the metal pretty strong yet after all the moving it around after all said and done?

We had a bad Hail storm back last spring, which is very rare here I might add. A PDR team setup in a local shop here and did very well. My truck was at a friends house about a mile from home and was under the cover of trees. I had a small handful of dents in the roof and on the tops of my fenders (my hood is fiberglass). I was very well pleased with their work. Couldn't even tell where the dings were at. The other vehicle at home was taken to a body shop...Bondo, Paint. Looks like doo-do. You can see where every place was nearly....Glad it's not my truck.

I had a nasty double ding from a big shopping cart in my drivers door. Bad location, right on the seam at the front.
Body shop estimate was 585.00 bucks.
Had a paintless guy do it. Can not tell where the ding was, way under a 100 bucks. Took him maybe a half hour.

I'm totally satisfied.

Main thing is to get someone with a lot of experiance. Let him train on someone elses truck.

Yes, but at $50-$75 bucks a dent(depending on size) it doesn't take long to pay them off. The guys that were up/down here could do from 1-3 cars a day depending on how bad they were.
