Rarely drive it, need special car?

With a long commute and rising gas prices, I bought a beater car to drive to work and around town to save me money on gas and wear and tear on the truck. So, now its sits all weed until the weekend and then sits more if the weather is bad. Are there any special precautions I should take to care for it? I try to start it up at least once a week and am looking into a cover (but I think it would be a big pain to get in on and off because of my trucks height.)

While your truck probably won't get as dirty as it would if you were driving it everyday, if it is sitting outside exposed to the elements, the paint will still be taking some abuse.

I would recommend frequent QD'ing with the best QD you can find. Other than that, you probably want to follow a paint maintenance routine similar to the routine you followed when it was your daily driver. (maybe not quite as frequent)

I think you'd find a cover to be more of a pain than anything else for your situation.

They're fine if you're putting the vehicle away for an extended period of storage, but I think the constant on-off for weekly driving might actually inflict more harm on the paint than just leaving it exposed to the elements and keeping it up with weekly washes and regular wax jobs.

I don't like the idea of putting a cover on a vehicle unless I know that both the cover and the vehicle have just been washed. Anything less will just introduce grit between the cover and the vehicle, inevitably scratching the surface of your paint!

How fast are you using the gas up in the truck? Might have to get some of that additive so the fuel doesn't go bad if you're not using it up that quick. Can't think of the name because I've never used it but I'm sure someone has.

If it's being driven once a week, then I wouldn't really worry about the tires getting flat spots in them. And just start it up every week or so and let it warm up if you're not driving it.

I wouldn't worry about it and enjoy not putting all those miles on your truck

That stuff is called "Sta-Bil" gas treatment.

FWIW -- I intend to add it to every tank of gas I buy for my truck, since I will only be putting about 2000-3000 miles per year on it!
