BLACK ahhhhh
Is the vehicle heavily oxidized with swirls and spider web marks? Also, are there any other major defects in the paint? Need to know what your trying to bring out so we can recommend the fixes
If it was a used car or just a car I had let go for a long time I would go ahead and start with claying the car from top to bottom. After that I would use a coat of ColorX to bring back the color. Black paint is a real pain in the rear end when it comes to any kind of swirl marks or spider webbing. So I'd recommend getting a Dual Action Polisher (such as the PC everyone is always talking about) using it with one of Meguiars several products designed on removing swirls and spider webbing. Personally I use #9 and it does a really good job but you may find something works better for you.
Top it with a couple coats of Meguiars NXT

Kanter,
This forum is full of advice on steps, tricks, etc. RockPick has posted some great advice and if you look at the pictures of his truck it's obvious he knows what he is talking (er, posting) about. Just look for his threads or search for them (be warned, there are many)!
This post also has some good information - specifically discussing neglected paint.

Look for the 4th post down.
Good luck!

Here is the story. My wifes sister is going to Japan for military reasons and is giving us here 2002 Durango RT with 60k miles. Its black and has been taken care of pretty well. My plan is to park the F150 for a little while and drive the Durango. I have never owned a black vehicle but I wash and wax my F150 with NXT weekly. Im just wondering how to get this thing looking real nice. Yes, its a Dodge so, its a piece but, hey its an RT and its FREE.
