Carbon steel generally rusts when exposed to salt and rain. Best break out the touch up paint. I too have installed the black nerf bars on my 03. Went with the black over the chrome knowing eventually they will pit and rust from road spray.

Mine are doing the same thing. Just a little bit of rust at the ends of the tubes, where they meet the plastic. It started about two months before the truck was out of waurantee. My milage was over 36,000 when I talked to the service mgr., and he said he would order me some new ones, and then just 'fudge' the milage. I haven't been able to get to the dealer, so I guess the deal is off. I'll have to paint em myself, I guess.

1999 F150 Flareside Extended Cab here. Mine are also showing a little rust on the ends near the front wheels. Kansas uses salt and stuff on the roads in winter so I wash the truck whenever the temp is above freezing.
