Rusty Frame

Over in the 2004 f-150 area, there is a thread about frame rust:

frame rust

I have an '03, and the frame is already getting rusty... the black wax coating from the factory isn't very good.

Is this rust just a cosmetic problem, or will it eventually become a real structural problem?

I'm up here where they put a lot of salt on the roads, and I was thinking about undercoating, but I've seen it actually cause rust when it starts to crack up. I am thinking about applying grease to the areas where the black wax is coming off, like I used to with foreign cars' unibody floorpans. Worked great. Any reason not to do this? any thoughts?
