Question Oil leak after oil & filter change

I just changed my oil and filter. Then I drove my truck about 15 miles and parked it in the driveway to inspect for any leaks. Only to see a very little bit of oil coming out the top of the filter where the seal ring is. I think I put the oil filter on correctly, first I filled it half full of oil, then wiped any dirt and grime off the seal and the place where the filter goes on the truck. I also spread a little oil around the filter's rubber seal. What could be causing it to leak? You think it may be just a little oil seeping out from the rubber seal from tightening the filter? I sure hope that's all it is.

My immediate reaction is that you perhaps left the old filter ring gasket in place and screwed the new filter on over it, thus having TWO rings gaskets in place. That's my one knock on the Ford 820s filter: happens almost every time I change filters.

But, the time I ended up with two ring gaskets, there was oil EVERYWHERE in a split second, so I doubt this is your problem. You might check out your old filter, however, and verify the old gasket is still on it.

Other though is perhaps you overtightened it and somehow distorted the gasket or filter base.

It's a Motorcraft FL-400S(I think that's the #). I wiped it off and drove it again and it did'nt leak this time. Everthing seems to be ok now. I think it was just some oil from installation. Thanks.
