Tires

Last August (2004), I purchased from Superior Tire in Toronto a set of Firestone Indy 500 Firehawks. Removed the OEM General Grabber AW.
The truck handles great in wet weather conditions, and its adheasion to the road in rain is awesome! However, I have had a balance problem with the tires since the sale.

The truck was out of town for the 4 weeks in later August and September on vacation. I tow a tent trailer and never got the speed above 100KM. When we returned to Toronto, I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel at speeds between 110 and 120, and I was alble to drive out of the vibration at speeds over 120 km. I have been back to Superior 3 times since getting back from vacation, I had been in on Nov 12/04 and was told by the Service Manager to have the truck alignment checked.

My Ford dealer is around the corner from them so I got it in to them that same day. Ford found the 4 wheels were correctly aligned and on going back onto the highway the next day the vibration was still there.

Yesterday Nov 16/04, I took the truck back to have it balanced again, this time it was taken for a test drive before balancing, 2 hours later, they have given up. The manager has stated that they will order in a new set of tires to try to get it right this time. I know that Firestone has a 30 day warranty of exchange to get it right or refund. I didn't expect the manager to order in a new set after almost 3 months and 5,000 km on the tires.

I have to say that I am very pleased with the service I have received with Superior, and the staff.

Hopefully, the new set wil balance properly and I can put this mystery behind me for good. I told the manager, that I was very pleased with the Firehawks, and if I ever have to replace the tires, I would order the same tires again. If there are any members in the Toronto area, I haghly recommend Superior Tire.

Had the new tires installed and balanced. Vibration is gone at 110, but is still there at 120.

Took the truck into the local Ford dealer and had a "Road Force" balance done on all four wheels.

The vibration is gone, and in the process found out that one of my wheel rims is marginal on the balance test. The mechanic told me that the wheel might need replacing in the future. This is probably why Superior was unable to balance the wheels properly. They don't have a Road Force balancing machine.
