caliper bolt fell off during offroading

did some good offroading this weekend and had one of the two bolts that holds the caliper in place vibrate off, it was the top one the caleper fell back and rubed on the inside of the rim knocking my wheel weights off, didnt couse any damage and i always go out with all types of spare bolts so it was an easy fix i threw some lock tight on there so this wont happen agian, for all of you out there i would suggest throwing some lock tight on those bolts yourselves

I have had that happen too. Also note that those bolts are grade 10.9 bolts. If they are replaced use an equal grade bolt. A cheap, low grade bolt might sheer off, this would suck even more than loosing a bolt.

These caliper pins should be replaced at every brake shoe change. I had the same thing happen to me while pulling a trailer a few months ago. My local Ford Mechanic said to change them at every brake shoe replacement and to check at each oil change for tightness.

I had the same thing happen this weekend ON THE WAY TO THE MUDHOLe of al things, but I wasnt so lucky. It cam off at 45 mph and dug the hell out of the inside of my rim. My next upgrade will be a completly new aftermarket front brake system. Ford really messed up with the design of these floating calipers. I have spoke with several ford mechanics and they tell me that they actually use an extremely strong locktight when they do brake jobs on these. It is such a common problem that the dealer had 200 of these bolts in stock.

HOLY POOP Batman!!!

it must be a trend ..

because one of the bolts holding my caliper fell out this past week too ... unfortunately .. I was on the highway coming home from the mountains

by the time I was able to pull over .. the caliper dug down into my rim and destroyed the rim!

I was able to jerry rig it enough to get to a ford dealership and purchase another bolt - but when I came back out .. the tire was flat.

I had the pleasure of changing my flat in front of their sales office w/o ONE person asking if I needed any help.

oh well... long story short ... I get new rims for xmas! doop! and maybe a new brake setup!

Hell yeah, I am definatly goin to look into another brake system next time its due. I have always been a Ford man but this floating caliper B.S. is for the birds. Especially on a 4x4 that they know all too well is goin to get rattled and shaken like crazy by al of us that actually USE our trucks.

I just did the front brakes on my 2002, and I had to replace the caliper on one side (my fault, long story). I'm actually glad it happened, though, because when I got the new caliper the parts guy told me to be sure I put lok-tite on the bolts before I re-install. As tough as it was to get those suckers out I imagine there was some serious glue in place. Glad I got the heads-up.
