Do Bed Rugs cause rot?

I was thinking about a bed rug, but I am not crazy about laying down a foam layer that can trap moisture and dirt. Wouldn't this be the same as a plastic liner. Have these things been around long enough to know what damage they may cause after four or five years.

I don't know how long they've been around but I know the work trucks at MotherTruckers (this is where i got mine)have had them in for a couple of years and they don't seem to have faded.

I would guess that if your truck was pretty clean when you put the bed rug in you would not get a lot of dirt under it and the newer trucks are buildt to drain the water that gets trapped under the rug. The rug in my truck is kept in the bed by a system of heavy duty velcro and the fact the four cargo holds that were removed before the rug went in and then screwed back into place after the rug was installed.

Check out their web site for more info http://www.bedrug.com/

There is an on line form you can fill out and they will send you a sample of the material. It's pretty neat stuff.

You said the newer trucks are designed to drain water in the bed? I have an 01 that I had a plastic bed liner instaled when I bought it so I have not actualy seen the bed. So how does it drain? Is there drain holes drilled in the bed?

Thanks

I may be wrong and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am. But, I think there were a couple of cut out in the lower corners of the front bed wall. I'm pretty sure these are meant to drain water out the front. I know when I've washed my truck I normally park it tailgate down the drive way to drain out the back but I'm sure I've seen water drain out of the front of the bed as well.

If you look at the picture of the 2001 Screw in the gallery section there is a shot of the bed of a white truck and you can see the cutouts I'm talking about.

The only drains are the seam line where the bed meets the vertical wall behind the cab. This is very small opening and itself will plug easily if not kept clean. I am thinking that the bed rug would just agrivate the problem of crap collecting under it and holding moisture, which would lead to the metal rotting. Under a cab I'm sure its terrific, but I am sceptical about a bed that is going to get wet.

OK my bad I went out to tha parking lot at lunch and undid the velcro at the front of the bed and haze10 is right. It does drain through the "seam" or "gap" between the bed floor and the front wall of the bed.

What are the two plastic cutouts for????

Anyways. My truck is always outside, you can see in the picture below that it's not usually parked under a lot of trees. When I pulled the Bed rug off of the velcro strips at the front wall and looked down to see the gap, there wasn't one speck of dirt or anything stuck down there to block the water from draining out.

That being said I've only had the bed rug on for about 6 weeks but you would think that any debris would be caught in the rug vs getting caught under it.

I may get some more of the heavy duty Velcro stuff to get a better seal at the top of the rug though.

You can always just drill a few drain holes in your bed. Just make sure you hit it with some touchup paint around the edges of the holes to keep it from starting to rust.

Intel486:

You always seem to have great answers or suggestions on here

Iwao:

How much velcro comes with the BedRug? Does it fit snug or is it kind of loose? Is it a solid piece from the front of the bed all the way to the end of the tailgate? where as when you open the tailgate there is no gap there. Or I guess a better way of asking is does it cover the opening between the tailgate and bed when the tailgate is down.

Drilling throught metal is fine. Easy as pie. I'm going to be pulling out the drill to get some holes in my bed for mounting some stuff in it. I'm just wondering how going through my Line-X is going to work...

my truck has had a Ford bed liner in it from day 1. I take it out once or twice a year and hose out the hole bed and hit any areas I deem suspect with paint or whatever it needs. But I rarely see very much dirt in there at all and I haul everything from grain to hay in it but none of that gets under the bedliner.

I think that those holes, which are also in the cab could be for some sort of manufacturing area, it would seem that the bed and cab could be picked up by these holes and the outside wouldnt be affected at all.
i just know they are handy for running CB antenna's and such through to the cab.

01,

I didn't do it myself I had it installed at the place I bought it.

There are long strips that run most of the length of the bed.

There are alos a bunch of small pieces about 3 inches long that are supposed to keep the side in place. I like the way the side tucks under the plastic rail on the side of the bed. but I think there should be on long piece that runs along the top of the rug at the front wall of the bed (under the back window) Instead the installer just pu a bunch of the short pieces there.

I'll probaly replace that.

When the tail gate is open the rug does cover the gap between the bed and the tail gate. There is a little bit of slack there that dips down a bit when the gate is open.

I love the way it works and the way it looks I'm just not crazy about the way it is fastened to the bed at the end of the tail gate and at the spot I mentioned earlier. I may have to figure out a way to replace the velcor in those two spots.

I have a Bedrug in my truck the Bedrug is great I installed it in about 1 ½ hours.
Before I bought the Bedrug I went to there web site and ordered the Free Fabric Sample.

Floor and side rugs zip together to form the one-piece soft bed liner.
Bedrugs web site stated the product is Water Proof and Stain Resistant
When I'm kneeling, sitting, or lying on the floor, I can feel the floor ribs a little but very little. I'm 80 inches tall and weigh 315 pounds
Not like the old Duraliner in my F 250 and thing are not sliding around back there.

I even used there email with great response time asking about more Velcro all they wanted was address a sent me another bag.

I bought mine online for $285 Delivered
