Herculiner

Has anyone ever used this stuff?

I have seen write ups on how to install. Seems to look ok when they are done. But I am wondering how well it holds up after time. If it looks good and if it protects from scratches very well.

If it works over the long haul, I would think it would be worth saving several hundred dollars over the spray in brands. Although It would be a little scary scuffing the *&@# out of your bed and hoping that you do it correctly.

I'm thinking about putting it on this month. I have a rubber bed mat, so I'll probably just do the sides for now. The local Menards store has it on sale for around $49.99. I'll have to grit my teeth when it comes to scuffing up the paint, but it has to be done to ensure a good mating surface.

I have it in my truck and it has held up well - with the exception of denting (which all spray/roll-ons do), so I just added a Duraliner over my Herculiner for the best of both worlds. Worked out great.

The Job

I'm currently roughing my box up to apply Herculiner. I'm using the suff pad in the kit, which makes a real job out of it. I'm wondering if it would help to wet sand it first? Any "body" guys out there? Help, my fingers are pretty sore right now and I'm only 1/3 complete. And there is nothing left to the suff pad. Is there a good pad to attach to a drill to speed up the process?

Reply you should be able to put some 100 grit sandpaper on a palm sander and hit all the high surfaces. Then use the scuff pad for the low places and places you can't reach with the palm sander.
Then just clean.
Don't get that stuff on exposed body parts, it has to wear off. Don't take a leak with it on your hands.

I finished up a Herculiner install this past weekend. I spent about 12 hours total on the whole job. About 8 hours was prep work (sanding, cleaning, taping) and the rest was the application and cleanup. To sand the truck bed, I used a rotary sander (80 grit) with my air compressor. I sanded enough to take off the shine and got down to bare metal in a few places. If I had it to do over again, I would pay someone to do a Line-X or Rhino liner. The end result was pretty good, and I saved about $250 doing it myself.

Ditto...

what JSCOTT said. After doing my Herculiner last week I would definitely have a spray-on installed. Not because of the quality or anything like that but because I nearly killed myself installing the thing. The sanding was the worst part. I thought a weekend would be plenty of time. Sand the bed Saturday morning, put the first coat on that afternoon and finish up on Sunday. Well, 9:00 PM Sat night rolled around and I was still preping the bed! I may be a perfectionist but I wanted to be sure I did a thorough job. I put the first coat on Sunday morning and the second that night. I finished up the tailgat on Monday. It was NOT an easy job at all. Although I'm very satisfied with the results I would pay to have it done next time.

Do not waste your money! You get what you pay for. Get a LineX liner and be done with it. In about three hours you can have a very durable, beautifull bed for about $400 and get 5-6 gallons sprayed on. How much did you spend on the truck? A plastic liner will cost $250-300,so think about it. It's a no brainer=LINEX!

I put herculiner in ~2 years ago. I haven't been happy with the results, it went on way too thin. I now have a mat thrown over the top of the herculiner, and I'm considering a bedrug.
If I had to do it over again, it would have been done professionally.
