Factory BL out....in with ?

Hi all,

I'm new to the board but have read many posts over the last week or so. Tons of great info on just about every subject.

I just purchased a new '01 F150 S/C 4x4 and it came with the factory bedliner. I really didn't want the bedliner since everything seems to slide around like crazy (including my dog), I would have preferred a Pendaliner mat or something like it. Anyway, I'm removing the BL (didn't even know about them rubbing off paint and causing beds to rust before I started reading this board) and want to go with a spray on. I know there are tons of posts about them but I would like to hear from people who have either the LineX or Rhino liners and how they like them, how they hold up, how slip/skid resistant they are, if they are proan to tearing, fade, etc.

I ordered a Leer cap for the truck and hopefully should have it in a few weeks. Question....can they spray the bed with the cap on or must I remove it prior? Probably a stupid question but I've never had a liner in a truck before.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the lengthy post.

Natty

Going w/Line-X.......very expensive!

Well, I've read enough here and on newsgroups to convince me that Line-X is the way to go. Amazingly, there are no, zero, Line-X dealers anywhere in NJ. The closest one is about 1.5 hours away in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania.

Anyone have experience with Line-X of The Lehig Valley? One thing that shocked me was the price I was quoted....originally $520.00!!! When I balked at the price he came down to $469.00 then I mentioned prices I saw on this message board of $320.00 and he dropped it to $439.00.

I guess he knows he has the only dealership within within a 200 mile area of Northern, NJ and he can get these prices.

BTW...he said they cover the whole truck, remove all bed bolts and hardware and will remove the factory Ford liner and even take off and re-install the Leer cap if it comes in before my appointment next week. Sounds like a first class outfit, still though....very pricey!

Hi Natty, I have a Line-X. I'd recommend looking at the work done in your area as far as which spray-in franchise is the best.
Stuff don't slide, period. You really have to push to move things around. 'Tear' really isn't a good term, 'chip' would be more like it. I don't have any chips but, I have seen them. Usually the installer warrants against chips and will repair for free. Fading shouldn't be a problem for you if it's protected from the elements with a cap.
As far as the cap goes, you definetly don't want it on when the liner is applied. Even if the applier did say he could work with the cap on, which I doubt, I wonder how good of a job he could do.

I try to keep my truck nice but, the inside of the bed I consider a truck. I sprayed it and forgot about it two years ago. It still looks decent with absolutely no care at all.

Unhappy

Hi Natty, just saw your second post. Don't let them rob you. If you can't get it done for less than $350 forget about it. Just leave the factory liner in. Get a piece of carpet remnant. The dog will like it and the sliding will be reduced.

(He's removing the factory liner for you so he can sell it. Thinking why would you want it anyway.)

Line-X pricing

Thanks Raoul,

I called two other Line-X dealers in PA just for pricing comparison (they are 2.5 and 3 hours away respectively) and their pricing was in-line with the guy I spoke to earlier.....$425.00.

Like I said...I guess they have the PA/NJ area sewn up and if you want Line-X, you'll pay. There are Rhino dealers closer but based on what I've read Line-X seems to be the premier spray on.

Not sure if I'll keep my appointment for next Saturday. That's alot of $$ to spend just before the holidays. May just remove the factory bl and drop in a JC Whitney or Penda mat, stash away a few bucks at a time and go for the spray come the spring.

Thanks again for the info. Regards,

Natty

Hey Nat, browse thru Popular Mechanics or some of the truck magazines at the local newstand. Most Line-X ads have a $20 off coupon in them. You might even be able to get it on their website.
I got mine done in Erie, PA for $400 and have absolutely no regrets. (Yes, I know Erie is a bit far to go...)

Good luck with whatever you choose.

thx

Thx Twisted...every little bit helps!

Will most likely wait until the spring...feel sort of guilty about dropping the $$ on the truck during the holiday season.

Amazing there are no Line-X dealers in NJ isn't it? Allentown is not too bad a ride, about 1.5 hours but still....looks like a wide open area for someone who might want to become a dealer.

Regards,

Natty

Line-X

Hey Natty--

Check out the install carefully. That is more important than the product. I have the Line-X and found out after it tore that they didn't sand the bed to rough up the paint prior to spraying. This causes sections to be "knocked" off and the paint below is slick. It is repaired for free when this happens but it is still a pain in the rear. In my next truck i will probably go with Rhino or Toff. I think Line-X looks the best, but those may be more durable (reference the chip comment in earlier post). Hope this helps. -- Martin

Line-X Line-X Line-X. Check their work. Mine was applied excellently, even under the bedrails. And not so much as a fleck of overspray on the plastic rails. If you put a dog back there in future, make sure you have some sort of rubber mat he can walk/lie on -- the lining will be tough on his paw pads.
I've hauled rocks, mulch, dirt, compost, a sofa and a deep freezer on a pallet. Still looks as good as new. It's great. After hauling a yard of dirt, I just back my baby up and hose down the bed. No more sweeping out cracks!!

And Raoul: This be A-murrrrika, bud. If that Line-X dealer knows he's the only game around, it's the law of supply and demand. He can charge what the market will bear. I don't like spending extra either, but what's the alternative? No liner or something inferior?

Out with the factory plastic... garbage!

I have a line-x from the same guy that did Skagel's, and must say, I'm impressed. Did a great job. I forget the cost... I'm going to have him do my hitch in the spring, as well as the hitch and bumpers from my Ranger. I've got some pix on my site...

Cool Toff

Toff quoted a price of around 370.00 with a coupon. I bought my 4 years old truck used and the liner was fading and a few patches were missing and starting to crack. Without paperwork , they went ahead and resprayed the bed. I'm very happy with it.

The only bad thing is that the warranty is non-transferrable, but they didn't ask.

Houston, Texas where the Sun bakes to a nice 100 degrees in the summer time.
