Engineering class project

I'm doing an interview for an engineering class if anyone could answer these couple of questions that would be great.

1. What type of truck do you own?
2. What are some issues you face when removing said truck cap?
3. What would make it easier to remove the cap?
4. How many people does it normally take to remove your cap?
5. Would it be easier if a truck cap could be removed by one person?
6. Would it be easier if you did not need to climb up into the bed?
7. How do you put the cap back on?
8. How many people does it take to replace the cap?

As a fellow engineering student, I'd love to help you out. However, I'm a little unsure what you mean by cap? Could you elaborate on what a "cap" is? Are you referring to a tonneau cover or bed cover/topper/solid bed cover?

1. What type of truck do you own?
-2005 F150 XLT SuperCrew
2. What are some issues you face when removing said truck cap?
-The locking mechanism is a little tricky sometimes
3. What would make it easier to remove the cap?
-I've never fully removed it, but if you're referring to rolling it up, I think its always easier with a second person. I'm not sure how this could be accomplished, but someway for it to roll up quickly and evenly on both sides would be most desired IMO
4. How many people does it normally take to remove your cap?
-Usually I do it myself, as I previously mentioned, sometimes the side I'm on will get a little ahead of the other. If someone is with me, they almost always lend me a hand.
5. Would it be easier if a truck cap could be removed by one person?
-Mine's fairly easy to remove with a single person, but a lot of times its just me when I need to roll it up, so yes, I suppose it could be easier with one person?
6. Would it be easier if you did not need to climb up into the bed?
-I'm sure this would make things a lot easier, especially for older truck owners or people who are either not able to climb up anymore, or have difficulties, or those who just don't want to.
7. How do you put the cap back on?
-Just unroll it, pull each side tight and attempt to get it velcro-ed done all the way
8. How many people does it take to replace the cap?
-I've never replaced it but if you're referring to just unrolling it, then it usually takes just one. But it's nice to have a second person so you can each pull a side tight and press it down

Since I filled out the survey in terms of my roll up bed cover, I may not meet the criteria for your survey. I'm just not sure if you are asking about a full removal of the bed cover or just rolling it up. For me, I've never had to remove it entirely. When I haul something that won't fit under, I simply roll it up and go on my way. Hope I helped at least a little Best of luck with the project.

1. What type of truck do you own?
2006 Lincoln Mark LT

2. What are some issues you face when removing said truck cap?
None- After looking carefully at every mfg product on the market in person, there were sooo many issues regarding quality, hinges, locks, etc I made my own.

3. What would make it easier to remove the cap?
That was an issue as well- I constructed a 2-piece unit built from aircraft grade Al (incluidng the hinges & locks)...each section weighs less than 40 lbs and even my wife can remove & install the sections in about 3 minutes each (or less).

4. How many people does it normally take to remove your cap?
1

5. Would it be easier if a truck cap could be removed by one person?
Yes

6. Would it be easier if you did not need to climb up into the bed?
Yes

7. How do you put the cap back on?
Utilizing a sliding (drop in , slide & lock) lock mechanism...the rear section slides into the front & is then locked into place similar to the rear aspect of the front section with a spring loaded lock/latch that pins itself into a rail installed under the upper bed rails.

8. How many people does it take to replace the cap?
1
Here's the pic.....

4. How many people does it normally take to remove your cap?2, but 4 makes easy work of it
5. Would it be easier if a truck cap could be removed by one person? agree
6. Would it be easier if you did not need to climb up into the bed? I dont generally.
7. How do you put the cap back on? One to two people on ea. side at corners, position cap and drop on rails.
8. How many people does it take to replace the cap?
2, but 3-4 ideal. My cap weights 220lbs if this helps.

If you have a truck cap like the one pictured above, about how heavy is it?
