Question Pre Release Cover from BAK Roll X (thoughts?)

I am a brand new F150 owner (new Ford Convert - former Chevy Tahoe owner) and am now in the market for a cover. From what I can tell everything has it's Pro's and Con's. I have found a new one that I am not sure is on the market yet Roll-X by BAK. It really looks like what I would be interested in. It is a hard cover which rolls up manually and sits above the bed when not in use see here http://blog.etonneaucover.com/bak-roll-x-review/ for more info. I am wondering if anyone has any experience, opinions or ideas about this. The price looks good, no box in the bed, secure, etc. Of course those are assumptions and from what I can tell you can't even see demo units yet. I really want a hard rolling top and I really do not know just how much these things leak. Would love to get any opinions on this. I'm going to try to track it down as soon as it's available.

thanks for the help!

Should find most of what you need here.
I just emailed Bak today for an update, they originally told us who are on their group buy list they would start shipping the first week of May, but I still have yet to be contacted by them for my payment information.

I don't think anyone has one yet since I think they are not shipping out yet. It should be available soon, I think it's going to be a hit, more info here: http://bakindustries.com/p-8241-roll...-overview.html

My experience with retractable covers is that they leak at the tailgate pretty good (Rollnlock, Rollbak). Others report less leaking like Retrax, etc. This new Roll-X sits on top of the rails and has no exposed hinges, so I think it should be pretty water tight.

Checking out their website, I just noticed they are using a picture of my truck on their home page. I have a white F150 Platinum and one day I hauled home a Little Tikes clubhouse for my kids and I posted it for fun on the forum, so I guess they must have snagged it from the forum.

Hey thanks everyone for the help here. I sent an email to BAK via their site and never got a reply (not helping me be a customer). I am really interested in this but status still looks pretty murky. if anyone hears any updates from BAK I'd really appreciate a repost. I might be willing to hang on for a month but if I can't get a better idea by then I guess it's off to decide my 2nd choice. I know how this "released soon" stuff can go so don't want to wait forever.

They said it should be out this month. For the latest updates, and a great guy to buy from, talk to Morrie who owns www.bakfactoryoutlet.com Many of us bought our covers from him.

Just to clarify: I don't think Morrie is associated with Bak Industries.

That's correct, but he's one of their featured dealers. From what he tells me, he visits the Bak factory on a regular basis and talks to Julian (CEO) alot too, so he's up to speed on their latest models and changes.

I have installed my Roll-X top and have to say it is exactly what I was looking for and expected. It looks great, it's been dry as a bone (just tailgated in the remnants of Issac here in Louisville), it's incredibly convenient and super easy to install. I only had one issue and I have notified BAK on the issue. The activator "levers" that engage the security have a small plastic "pad" that is glued onto the lever. The glue didn't hold on one side of mine and I have a zip tie holding it in place. BAK said they would look into making an improvement there.

I love the "no profile design" and the ability to use a truck like a truck whenever I want to do so. I expect that you will need to keep some protectant on the vinyl to keep it looking good and I intend to do that. I prefer the vinyl look so was ok with that. Great design.

BAK has struggled a bit with their glue. The first gen Bakflips literally fell apart when the glue did not hold in the summer heat.

Congrats on the new cover. I am looking at this one as well for my new 2012 SuperCrew.

Did you install it on top of the factory drop-in bedliner? If yes, any issues with the bedliner during the install? Thanks.

BAK says you can install these over a bedliner.

Installed over a factory bedliner - no issues. One thing you should be careful about is the rubber gasket has a tendency to get pinched as you install it. Just make sure you get it the way you want it before tightening down. THat's really only cosmetic though as the edge get's turned under a little. Works fine either way.
