ladder rack

from time to time ive seen where a ladder / lumber rack would be nice to have. the prices have really dropped on these, not much demand for them in this economy. this is the problem, my cross over tool box is the type that has a one piece lid. ive see that the ladder racks push the tool box away from the be by quite a bit, to be able to open it. looks dumb. and no i cant afford to buy a new side opening tool box. i thought about filling in the gap with some diamond plate. any one have any ideas on how to make this setup look half way decent ? i know its all about the practicality but it would be nice to have it look good to.

I'd Call some welding shops and ask if they have some scrap aluminum diamond plate pieces they'd sell you. Or a metal recycler. Then take it to a friend with a tig welder, unless you have your own.
