Bakflip HD (Ford Version) What the heck!!

First off, I have a 2010 Supercrew with a Ford Version Bakflip HD. We had a very minor hail damage storm last week and it put a bunch of dings in the cover. I would think that the Ford version cover being sold in the Midwest would put up with very small hail. There is no trace of anything on my truck at all. The hood and roof are spotless. Even when the storm happened, there wasn't much hail coming down. I am completely shocked at the lack of durability of this product. I almost think the G2 would have held up to the tiny hail more than the HD. For those that are debating which version to go with, get the F1.

Had anyone had the same thing? Did you find a way to get the dings out??

The Ford OEM version and the HD are aluminum, so it's very easy to dent.

Yes, but as I read, even Bakflip calls it a "it is based off of the HD model". If it is based on a HD , hence heavy duty, it isn't.

Here 's someone I found on JC Whitney's web site that had similar issues -

"I purchased a BakFlip HD for my 2009 Ram Crewcab from JC Whitney after reading some good reviews about them. I wanted the HD model because my truck sits outside and they claim it is stronger than the regular model. Within a couple weeks, we had a small hail storm. Pea sized hail that did no damage to the truck or any of my neighbors cars. The BakFlip had dozens of small dents in it."

I contacted BAK and they said that their warranty did not apply, that I should contact my insurance company. The cover looks nice, but is not Heavy Duty in any way. No tonneau I have ever owned would have been damaged by the tiny hail that ruined this one. The extremely thin aluminum panels are easily dented and damaged. Way too much money for something this flimsy."

I guess I'm screwed............. Worst money I ever spent on a product.

New truck, dented cover - nice.

The OEM version has thicker seals, other than that, it's the same as the HD. Like you said, "Heavy Duty" might be a bit strong.

sorry, but any aluminum cover is going to dent.

The heavy duty for HD mainly means for how much weight it can hold vs. the G2. The HD has slightly thicker panels than the G2 so it can hold 400 pounds vs. 300 pounds on the G2.

Last I heard a couple of months ago, BAK was undergoing testing through Ford to upgrade the OEM cover to the F1 frp panels. Not sure where that stands.

My HD cover will be 2.5 years old soon and so far the seals are holding up fine and I still don't get any leaks and I don't have any dents in the cover either (but I've never been through a hail storm). I had an Advance folding aluminum cover on my last truck and it had a few dents after 5 years of ownership.

I'm wondering if the dings will pop out with a hot sunny day. I contacted Bakflip via email and they advised me to call them. I'll update once I get a chance to call.

Maybe you should contact Julian Maimin, the owner of BakFlip industries like this guy from the Dodge forum did. Julian is a sponsor on that forum and replaced the guys cover.

I contacted Bakflip yesterday via email and a person by Jackie told me to call the customer service number. The rep today said to take some pictures and send them to Julian. We'll see....

I have the F1, but I also don't feel it would fare well in any kind of hail storm. Post back and let us know how customer service treats you. Thanks.

Referring the F1: FRP (fiberglass reinforced plasic) is pretty darn tough! You can go to Home Depot/Lowes and check it out, they sell it there. I've not beat the snot of a F1, but I've beat the snot out of FRP.

Wait, Truck bed covers at HD/Lowes? When did that start? What department are they in?

Fiberglass reinforced plastic comes in sheets, usually white in color. Just ask for "FRP".

This is getting frustrating as hell.

Per "Jackie" she emailed me back saying call the number - so I did. I talked to Jim (I believe). Jim said to email Julian, so I did. Julian was supposed to call back - no dice. Julian sent my emails to Lauren (VP of Ops). I sent Lauren my story and included all the pictures showing the damage. She came back and gave a price to upgrade to the F1. For 1, I was glad to see that they want to help, but this is where things stopped again.

I emailed back asking for all the details in terms of how to proceed. She emailed back saying to call her and they need the change in price plus shipping. I responded back expressing that I would call, but I also wanted to know what the shipping would be and the logistics. NO RESPONSE. I was busy with work, so I finally had time yesterday to call. Called in the morning, left a message with the receptionist - no response. Called hours later, was on hold to talk to Lauren which was supposed to be a few minutes, 15 minutes later I couldn't wait any longer. The rep asked who I was prior to transferring to Lauren. No response yet again....

Left Julian and Lauren an email last night how I am getting even further frustrated due to the poor communication and customer service response. I just don't get it.

At the end of the day, if I had a G2, I would have nothing to complain about. But, since this is a HD version, it should have held up to MINOR hail.

Definition of HD-

Definition of HEAVY-DUTY

: able or designed to withstand unusual strain <heavy–duty trucks>

The Bakflip HD is clearly not a HD product.

You have to be persistent. If you look at link to the Dodge Ram thread, the poster named "old jeep" got satisfaction but only after a very long drawn out process.
