hard tonneau cover

hey,
i have been wanting to get me a hard tonneau cover for my truck (01 screw)
but don't really feel like paying several hundred for one. so i was wondering, i can fiberglass myself, so how hard and how much do yall think it would cost, buy the railing, buy the fiberglass material, buy a way to lock the cover (i think the hardest part) and make my own cover.. i know that it will be very labor intensive to make one myself, the only thing that i won't be able to do myself would be paint.

but do yall think if i through and built my own, i could save some $$$

I would think that by the time you make some type of mold to form the cover, along with the materials, hardware, etc.....not to mention the labor hours, paint, it might be worth buying one.... have you considered Craigs list or EBAY for a used one????

Good Luck, hope it works out for you......

Had a friend long ago that had one made out of plywood. It actually looked pretty good and kept the weather out. I think anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Most times I like building stuff for two reasons - saving money and the self-satisfaction end of it. If I'm not saving money over buying something store bought, then the self-satisfaction end alone usually isn't enough for me to build it myself. Then I'll just buy it. But, I mainly work with wood. So, a fiberglass tonneau wouldn't be in my "things I can build" list.

Ranger413, There is no reason you could not do it as it is nothing but a flat bottomed boat.... If you have the talent and the ability,,, go for it. Again, Good Luck and I hope what ever you do works out for you.....
