I had the SnugLid on my 2006 King Ranch and I really liked it. It has a lower profile than the ARE and it fit perfect on my truck. It never leaked once the whole time I owned it. The cost in early 2007 was $1100 painted to match the truck and I added the remote opener for $200 about 3 months later.

I bought an ARE cover back in January for my 09 FX4. I have had no problems with it and love it. The only problem I have had was dust getting in the bed. I sealed around the tailgate area with weatherstripping. I put a spacer bar in the back to keep my tools and stuff from shifting if I had to brake hard.
06 Sandstone thats an awesome looking truck and that train horn should be made original equipment on all ford trucks.Wish i could mount one on my Harley
I've also got the SnugLid, just because I like the lower profile. And, after reading an article from a guy who installs different types of lids, for all manufacturers, I ended up buying the SnugLid TC...with the lock on each side, instead of the single lock SnugLid SL. In this article, the guy said he changes out 3-4 single locks a week, but has never had to change out the side locks that just push a lever up under a shaft. And, I'd previously had an UnderCover that was like that, so it was no big deal.
I've had it a couple of months now, and been in 2-3 bad rain storms. Everything has stayed totally dry on the inside...not even a small leak of any kind.

Ah, I found the article I was referring to above. It was an article by Tom Zizzo titled "Tips on Buying a Shell or Top For Your New Truck" where he said "...the real trick is for it to be able to open and shut with ease, and for this reason, I like to stay away from these shut-and-lock latching systems. These latching systems work on the idea that your truck bed is now like a big trunk-use a key to open it, then slam it shut to lock it. Many of the popular brands operate this way, and they all say they work great, but I have sold and installed many lids, and on average, we would replace 2 to 3 Snuglid SL lid locks every week. The Snuglid TC lid, and the ******* basic lid, use the standard lock that turns and swings a cam under a fixed plate to lock it in place. This is really the best way to go. It's not that fancy, but there are no headaches later on." Made sense to me, and finally convinced me to go with the SnugLid "TC" over the SnugLid "SL".
Mickey,
I agree the two locks are much simplier. I had them on my first SnugLid and they worked great. I used to lock just the driver side, unless I had something expensive in the back. This made it easier to open when I was in a hurry.
The single lock on my new one was not too bad, but I did have issues with the remote control aspect before I made my own adjustments. When I took the cover off, I was surprised at how simple it was to fix. After making a few minor changes, I never had issues again with the remote or the single lock. I sold the truck about a year later and the new owner was thrilled with the remote opening of the lid.

I took my truck by a dealer today to have the Snuglid SL checked out. Two guys made some adjustments to the linkage and the lid began to open with the remote most of the time. He also said that the shocks need to be replaced. The guy said these are the same shocks used on the short bed ( I have the 6' bed) and the lid is just heavy. I don't think the shocks need to be replaced. Perhaps a stronger spring that pops the lid up. If the latch will just release every time, I'll do the rest.
I was told when I was shoping that ARE made a low profile lid also but stop making them. I actually saw the brochure. I wonder if ARE had problems with their remote also??

If you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to adjust the linkage yourself. The first time I did mine, the top would open about half the time. After I adjusted them further, it started to open all the time. It still sounded like it was opening twice, but that is just the way the solenoid works on the opener. Mine would always pop-up and then, I just had to lift it by hand.
I did not have a problem with the shocks, but I had the 5.5' bed.
