Onyx vs. Line-X

Does anyone out there have any experience with Onyx spray-on bedliners? I've read the past posts. There doesn't seem to be any conclusive information. I was all set to have a Line-X bed liner put into my '06 SCab. I was just settling on a place to install it. So I called the Ford dealership today that I bought my truck from to see where they send brand new trucks for there customers. They send the trucks to Yipes Auto in Wilmington MA. They had someone from Yipes call me. He said that they switched over from Line-X to Onyx about a year ago. He told me they switched over because of the fading problems that were seen on black Line-X liners. He said that Onyx is the same material and is sprayed on using the same exact method. It also has a lifetime warranty. And has the same skid resistant finish as Line-X. I’m not sure if I should go with them or go to a random Line-X shop in the area. Any comments?

Below is the Onyx website.

I don't know anything about Onyx, but doesn't their reason for changing seem very fishy to you? We switched to an "identical" product because we are having "X" problem with the current product...

Seems to me, if you are having a problem with one product, you would change to a different one. I've talked to a lot of Line-X dealers that have changed to something else, and that would be a completely new reason. The two most common reasons I hear are price of chemicals and OSHA (targeting Line-X dealers in some areas). Whether those are the real reasons or not, can't tell you - but they are a common theme.

Well, I heard he LOST his LINE-X franchise. Now, I'm not certain of that. There is a girl at Onyx (can't remember her name) that emailed me and wanted to discuss the Onyx product with me. I said, sure, and I gave her my cell number but she never called me. I even contacted her again to see if she would call me. No go, I'm not sure what spooked her. As far as I know, there's only one Onyx dealer. That means they are probably buying the chemicals from somewhere and slapping the Onyx name on the barrels. I'm not saying Onyx is a bad product, I'm saying it's a mystery. One thing is for sure, they most likely do not have control over the quality of the manufacturing of the product they sell.

EDIT: Bryndon, we posted at the same time! OSHA has been in lots of LINE-X dealerships as well as other brands that use isocyanate. LINE-X mandates a safety program which includes the use of a fresh air respirator, negative pressure spray booths, protective clothing, etc. So, if the LINE-X dealer is doing what they are supposed to be doing, they should have no problems with OSHA. OSHA representatives were present at and conducted a class at LINE-X's first national convention in Dallas a year ago. LINE-X dealers had the opportunity to ask questions and I learned a lot at that meeting.

Our timing was odd! At SEMA Spring I talked to several X-Line-X guys - some of them just don't want OSHA poking around at all. It's not even whether they are doing things right or not. I don't expect many (any?) bigger dealers, like you, to change... it's the smaller guys that seem to be moving, which may well be because they aren't following the correct safety practices... which is an issue with all of the sprays. And it will catch up to them no matter what brand they spray.

I talked to a guy from Ultimate Linings who claims to convert 3 to 4 Line-X dealer per month (I talked to the same guy at SEMA 2005 and he was making the same claim)... it's actually pretty funny, if you do the math of all the spray in systems that say they convert Line-X guys, we should be at a negative number of Line-X dealers already. Anyway, this guys was claiming that they supply the chemicals to a lot of the different brands of spray in - maybe Onyx is one of their mixes?

As I've said before, if I were going to get a spray in, it would be Line-X - but they never lasted under my usage. Maybe for the Jeep tub, have to see.

I don't think ANY company wants OSHA around. They can fine you for Dixie Cup on the floor for being a tripping hazard, no kidding.

Well, LINE-X has over 2 million bedliners on the road. It must work for some folks.

Works for a lot of folks - as I've said before, I can be pretty tough on trucks!

I don't know about their reasoning but linex definitly has the most outrageous chemical prices in the industry, so I can see that being a reason that they would switch.

No question about it, LINE-X chemicals are expensive. But, so are Lexus and BMW. I don't see many Lexus and BMW dealers switching to Kia. And, you know, a Kia will get you across town just as good as a Lexus or BMW.

Don't forget to add advertising costs. Line-x is advertising. I saw a metro bus with the side paited with a line-x ad. With all the competition I suspect line-x is trying to differentiate themselves buy billing it as a premium product.

Thanks everyone for their response. I am kind of suspicious of the Onyx. Especially where I can’t find anyone who had it sprayed on their truck. But isn’t it true that Line-X had fading problems and that is why they came out with the XTRA. Can anyone recommend a good Line-X installer in Mass?

I've got one in my 07 no fading so far, but it's only seen the past winters sun. LineX of NH has a great shop in Concord NH, but probably too far for you. Hey, does MA charge tax on the spray in? NH doesn't charge sales tax, so might be worth a ride. I called and the truck was in their shop 30 minutes later.

That's a good point about the sales tax. I'm not sure MA charges. Is the shop actually in Belmont NH on 106? I could not find on in Concord. Wht color is your liner? Did you have the XTRA put on?

if you saw a Line-X ad on a bus you can bet your a$$ the local dealer had to pay for it, as a corporation line-X does about ZERO promotions

I had Line-X Xtra color matched installed 3 weeks ago, so I can't address any fading problems (tho with the Texas summer coming up, ask me later.. lol).. but they did match my medium wedgewood blue pretty much exactly.. I don't think twice about tossing anything in the bed now, used to hate scratching the paint.. everyone who sees it thinks it looks amazing..

LINE-X Corp advertising does not include buses. That was a specific dealer paying for that. LINE-X Corp advertises on cable television and in magazines. Soon, you will hear about a nationwide promotion for auto dealers.

If you have LINE-X with Xtra, you will not have any fading problems.
