Leer 700 Series: Very bad experience so far
Hey guys,
Well i needed to vent so i guess ill do it here.
3 weeks ago i took the next step in my trucks evolution, a brand spanking new Leer 700 series bed cover (black of course). I went to the local Leer dealer and placed my order. 1xbed cover 1xlight 1xremote entry 1xblack headliner. Great! paid cash and got it order. Was told 2 to 3 weeks to arrive....
mmm the excitement. 2.5 weeks later I get a call. Sweet, its in. So i leave my truck to get the lid installed and sometime towards the end of the day i get a call from the dealer. "i have some bad news, looks like when the guys were cleaning the cover, the discovered a scratch on it, that judging by the looks of your truck, you would not be happy with. This leaves us with 2 options, either send the cover back to leer or discount it to you." Well in my mind i paid GOOD money for this cover and i just want it like i ordered it. I asked him if there was any reason that Leer would object to having it repaired locally at the Ford dealership. The call was made and they shipped it to the Ford dealership. Fast forward to Friday.
The cover was ready to be picked up from ford so i drop off my truck at 1430 and tell them to git er done. I probably wont be back till after 5 so leave the keys in the truck. I arrive and pickup the truck, the lid looks great, then i start to look around. Something that looks like bug guts (dried and crusty) is all over the passenger edge of the cover, there are little things that look like pocks on the back (very small but visible to the **** eye) and on the top there are light spots (looks like the clear coat bubbled or something).
I just paid over a thousand dollars for what looks like a used freaking cover.
I went home, cleaned off the guts to find more blemishes, on the corner and more on top.
This is sickening, you can bet your butt im going to be in there monday. What do yall think? I think im going to ask that they have the whole thing repainted. It needs to be sanded prepped and painted from scratch. Oh yah one more thing....leer forgot to send my keyless entry. wtf?
Give me your thoughts!!!!

If they put enough clear on it, they can water sand it and re-clear coat it. However, if they were skimpy on the clear, they will sand right through the clear, into the paint, and then it will need to be repainted also.
FYI, If they missed a spot with the clear, it will feel like an orange's outer peel.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear of your misfortunes. I would be pee'd too. I have a 700 but there were no problems with it.
I would have the retailer send it back to Leer and get a new one. You spent alot of money. You deserve better.
If it gets repainted they would have to fully prep it. I wouldn't settle for less.
Good Luck!

The problem you are going to have now is that all your paint issues will be with the ford dealer and not Leer. Once the top was painted at the dealer this took all liability away from Leer on any paint issues. They didn't do the repaint so it isn't their problem. You should have let the dealer return it to Leer to avoid any hassles
On the keyless entry this is something that will be taken up with the Leer dealer and is very easily fixed.
I sell ARE covers here and have very few problems at all. Mostly just scratches and such from loading at the factory. The dealer should have inspected it when it was taken off the truck and sent it back right then and called you and let you know what happened (at least this is what I do for my customers). It's not hard to inspect a cover or top when you take it off the truck and put it back on if there is a problem.

I have had experience with Leer in the past. Their covers look nice, but in my experience the quality is not up to par. Also, if you have paint issues, it takes longer to get the problems fixed than it took to build the cover initially.
I agree, Leer makes a very nice cover, but their repair service and paint is bad beyond description. My cover never matched my truck. Sent it back with gas tank door to match the paint and it was much worse after repair. After much direct discussion with leer they agreed to send a new cover still does not match the dealer broke all the aluminium clamps using an Impact on them. I still have a bad paint match and no clamps. I bolted it on with four stainless steel bolts. Leer customer service and the dealer got to the point where they would not even take my call!! i might add that I have had other pieces painted by a local body shop, and they have no problem matching the parts to the truck what so ever.
That was the one major issue that I had with Leer. Every customer who had warranty issues ended up waiting forever to get anything fixed and then most of the time, the problem wasn't even fixed right. I had a guy who had some paint cracking, sent it back, took 12 weeks to get it back, and then about 3 months later the cracks came back.

When I got a cap for my Ranger it was between the ARE and the LEER. I ended up going for the more expensive LEER because I figured if it's more money, it has to be better, right? It took a month before my rear lock was completely seized up and I couldn't unlock it.
I called LEER and asked them if I could get a new one sent out. No, all of that is handled through the dealer (which is an hour away) -- great. Had to call them, drive there, drive home, wait for the part, drive back, have it replaced...
Then in another month, it was frozen up again. Had I known that I would have gotten the ARE...oh well, the cap is someone else's problem now haha.

I have a leer and no problems with it, its just sumtimes bad things happen it doesnt mean its that product totoally, it is just human error sumtimes, sorry to here about the problems, good luck.
I'm glad now I didn't buy a used 2004 when I bought my truck it had a Leer camper shell on it. With all your problems and some of the others that had problems I'm glad I went iwth a new 05 when I bought my truck. Who knows if I would have had any problems out of that Leer if I bought that truck or not but after reading this thread I'm glad I didn't buy that truck.
