Smile Long-term Herculiner Experience

I've searched and researched the many posts about the Herculiner DIY roll-on liner and the folks who installed it seem to like it.

I'm curious as to the long-term usefulness and durability of this liner. I've been warned that it fades fast, and is prone to cracking. Anyone have the Herculiner in for a year or more?

I'm not as worried about cracking and/or fading as I plan on installing a Tonneau cover within a month or two anyhow. Thanks.

13 months in mine. Fades fast, holds up well, but it seems as time goes by the more I can see spots of paint through it. When I finish my year here and get back to my truck it will get another couple of coats, and it will still be cheaper than a spray-in.

Cool

Same here. You can find when I did mine in the long Herculiner thread on this site. It's been over a year by now I think. The initial shine hides any areas that weren't coated thick. As it dulls, the shine of paint is just visible in those areas. I'll probably just get another gallon. I'll use what I need, then figure where to put the rest Still gonna be less than half that of a spray in and I don't have to post a horror story of Line-X overspary all over my truck

In the areas I did really well, mainly the floor, tailgate and wheel arches, it looks fine and has held up fine.

The cracking is because they let the liquid pool up too much. They tell you in the directions not to do that or it may develop cracks like that.

I've had my Herculiner for just about a year now. It's faded but held up very well. I haul my motorcycles weekly. After I'm done I take the hose to it and wash it out. No cracking at all.

It's a h*ll lot better than LineX that we have in our work trucks. Within 6 months it's faded chipped and just doesn't hold up as well as you would think for the cost difference.

I did my bed with Herculiner more than 14 months ago and I will never pay someone to spray my trucks again. My '99 Ranger received a Lava Liner spray-in coat and they REALLY made a mess. I doubt that they even did a good job of preparing the surface.

I bought the 1-gallon kit and 2 extra quarts. I put on 3 coats. So far no cracking, peeling or anything. I even picked up 1000lb of bricks from Home Depot recently. As the forklift driver was sliding the pallet into my bed, the pallet lost about 1/4" of wood as my liner acted like a rasp - no damage to the liner though. As an experiment, I painted a small area with black Rustoleum paint and it still looks nice and shiny. Next time I think I'll paint the whole bed after applying Herculiner. I'll probably give it a couple of days just to sit and cure.

Just got this back from the Herculiner folks.

Don,
Thanks for your e-mail. The sun can cause UV damage to Herculiner. However, to restore Herculiner you must clean it properly with Spic'n Span or any other neutral household cleaner and rinse throughly. Then you can
apply Armor All, although this can cause the surface to become slippery. We currently have a new top coat product that is available through us at an introductory price of $14.99.

If you have any questions, call us @ 800 477-5847.

Sincerely

Herculiner Tech Dept.

Hope this helps....
Don

Question

Interesting...How much does this stuff cost roughly? And, tell me more about the application and how it looks. I'm not sure I understand the fading issue. Thanks.

Cool

It's about $100 a gallon. And you'll need another quart for the best coverage. If you look at the threads about Herculiner, the new installs are very shiny and black. After a while, it loses the shine, and turns a little more greyish. Not much color change, mostly the shine is gone.
