Do it yourself bedliner

In case anyone is interested I just bought a gallon of Herculiner bed liner (www.herculiner.com). It's suppose to be kinda like a do-it-yourself Rhino lining. I'm only planning on coating a toolbox and the little section of bed and tailgate my bedliner doesn't cover but, if anyone would like to here about how hard it is to apply and what I think about the stuff just let me know and I'll go into details. The toolbox is suppose to come in tomorrow so hopefully I'll have a chance to try the stuff out by the end of the week.

Sorry fellows, looks like I won't be trying the stuff out till hopefully next week. I made the mistake of ordering the toolbox from Pep Boys not realizing one week their time is a month in real life. Atleast I know never to buy anything from there again.

Well, after only four weeks (5-7 days Pep Boys time) my truck box finally came in. It was really quite an exciting experience, they brought it out from the back and it was in this big cardboard box and they had all the other employees clapping (well, not really but it's nice to dream) and they carried it outside to the truck. Then, they opened the box with fireworks bursting in air to find the thing not only fell off the truck, it also must have fallen off the train as well when they were shipping it. I don't think there was one side that didn't have atleast one dent. I promply got my money back and got out of there as fast as I could to never return again.
Sorry it's taking so long to give a report on the do-it-yourself bedliner but, I will post as soon as I get something to try it on.

Couldn't you just put a good coating on Manny, Joe or the other guy? We been waiting over 15 days (Pep Boys time).

I just checked out the wed site, look at the MSDS link, urethane is used on parking deck surfaces, meaning very wear resistance, hard to work with, worst than epoxies, must follow prep instructions, hard to cleanup, otherwise should get a good finished product.Apply in well ventilated area and good luck

Well, it only took a couple months but, I am now an owner of a tool box!! I also just put on a coat of herculiner in the inside of it. So, as promised my opinion and experiences with it:
It all starts off with you scuffing up the surface you're applying it to. They include a 3M pad in the kit to do this job. I found it to be sorta a yucky job, I don't like manual labor like that. I would have used an electric sander with like 400 grit sandpaper if the bottom of the box wasn't ribbed. The next step is cleaning everything you're applying it to with Xylene but, I couldn't find any so, I used acetone. Nothing like having your head in a box while using acetone.
After you get all that done you then get to move to the real challenge, opening the can! They give you a can opener which was only able to open the can half way in which case I ended up using a screw driver. In the instructions they say you can hand mix the stuff but, they recommend a mixing attachment for a drill. I think they should say, "BEFORE OPENING THIS CAN, YOU BETTER BUY YOURSELF A MIXING ATTACHMENT FOR A DRILL BECAUSE YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT!!" The stuff is almost like roofing cement after the stuff has settled to the bottom. I found applying the stuff pretty easy but, you just have to watch out for clumping. If there is something you don't want to coat with the stuff you might want to mask the stuff off with tape before starting.
Just looking at it, it looks like it should hold up pretty well. I'll put my tools in it tomorrow and see if the stuff still looks good at the end of the week after they've rattled around for a couple hundred miles.

Thumbs up

HEY GUYS, WONDERING ABOUT THE HERCULINER DO IT YOURSELF KIT? WONDER NO MORE. I WENT AND GOT IT FRIDAY AFTER MUCH RESEARCH AND DECIDED TO DO IT. I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW IMPRESSED I WAS AT HOW SIMPLE IT IS. THE ONLY THING I FOUND IS THAT I HAD TO GET AND ADDITIONAL 3M PAD AS THE ONE THEY SUPPLY IS SORTA SMALL, AND OH YEAH, TAKE THERE ADVISE AND WEAR GLOVES. KINDA HARD TO GET OFF YOUR HANDS. EVERYTHING WENT ON REAL SMOOTH, JUST HAD TO MAKE SURE THAT IT WAS STIRRED WELL BECAUSE THE PARTICLES WILL FALL BACK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CAN. CLEAN UP WAS PRETTY EASY. JUST MAKE SURE YOU TAPE OFF REALLY GOOD AND THAT YOUR BED IS REALLY CLEAN BEFORE YOU START. IF YOU DON'T CUT ANY CORNERS, YOU WILL BE AS HAPPY AS I AM WITH MY NEW LINER. GOOD LUCK GUYS, AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME.

PHINICEM,

Cant find your email address here, and I have a few questions about your bed-liner.

How much prep is involved? Do you just lightly scratch the surface? How thick does it go on? And did you have enough in the kit?

Sorray about all the questions. Thanks,

Is the Herculiner spray on or roll on? I saw an ad in a magazine with a little paint roller beside the can.

OK... I suppose I should have done some quick research before posting my question. It's amazing what you can find out with a quick trip to the herculiner web site.
