Bedliners and Rust

I have an 03' FX4 w/factory Ford bedliner. My question is for the folks that have had a bedliner installed for some time now.

Has anyone experienced any rust problems between the liner and the bed/rails?

Thanks.....John

Hi,

I also have an 03 FX4 and although I have not seen any rust, I took out the Boxliner one day after hauling some sand ( I wanted to clean it all out.) And noticed that the paint had rubbed off in several places. This was after only 10k. I think there will be some rust there in the spring, I plan on taking it out again and taking care of it properly. Not surehow yet, anyone have any ideas?

Dave,

That's exactly what I was worried about.....the bedliner wearing into the finish of the bed. I'm thinking of puting on a cap and loose the bedliner. I have heard in the past that bedliners left on will eventually lead to rust on the surface of the bed due to liner- to-finish contact and high humidity. Seems like there should be "bed friendly" liners out there, although I don't know that.

I had a Ranger with a cap and rubber mat in the back. That worked well plus it is easy to take out for washing after hunting trips.

John,

Yea I was very surprised to see it at only 10k. I was thinking of taking it out and using the spray on bedliner in just the areas where it rubbed the paint off. Then but the box liner back on. I have about 20k on now and with the amount of scuffs and nicks in the bedliner, I think it is doing more good than harm.

On my 2000 truck, the bedliner wore the paint off after 100 miles while I waited to get a Paintsaver. The Paintsaver is a high density foam pad that prevents the rubbing; it did work. The bed area is highly galvanized and has drains. After 4 years mine looked perfect under the liner without a trace of rust or additional rubbing.

I've never had a drop in liner, but I've never seen one that didn't eventually rust. What max used sounds like a pretty good product though. I was really wanting to get a spray in liner, but I've got a fiberglass tonneau and rubber mat, and I'm not sure I need the spray in anymore. I don't do a lot of hauling, and it won't protect the sides, but cushions the bed to help prevent dents, and nothing will slide on it. I still will probably get a spray in someday, but I'm sure the mat will go back over it. Dad has a spray in with a fiberglass tonneau and a piece of color matched household carpet in his which looks pretty cool I think...

Well, if the bed is in too bad of shape, you could always do a spray-in bedliner...that hides anything!

I've had drop in bedliners and in the end they rub away the bed's paint then rust sets in. Paintsavers and other under liner solutions are good, but it still doesn't solve the problem of water and dirt getting under the liner.

The best solution is a spray on liner. I have Line-X in my 2002
F-150 and love it. Rhino is also good. Shop around, read the posts and you'll see the majority of folks here opt for a spray on liner.

I just pulled out the factory Ford bed liner out of my 97 F-150 to check for rust. No paint wear or rust at all in the bed. There was a pretty thick rubber pad under the liner. There is a little clear coat wear on the top of the bed rails, but that's it. I haul rocks, concrete and wood around all summer, so I was pretty impressed.

Considering I live in a very humid climate, and the rest of the truck is rusting, the bed is in fantastic shape. I just put the bed liner back in.

1993 f-150 w/ 135,000. pilled the bedliner out today. some paint rubbed off, a lots of dirt that found it's way between the bedliner and the bed. buy no rust anywhere. only the second time the liner has been removed since i bought the truckin 1992.

Boy, what a delimma, delima, delime, what a problem!
I ordered a "BedRug" and I'm looking for a soft tonneau for the time being, I might also order a bed mat from FORD, they look fairly cool......

afterall, writing a check for $27.000.00 yesterday has me concerned about mainting this thing properly.

We bought my truck new in 2000 and the first thing we did was take out the factory bedliner. At this point the truck had 100, maybe 125 miles on it and already there were significant rubbed spots in the paint. IMO drop-ins are bad news and the best thing you can do to handle the problem is to throw the damn thing away and get your bed sprayed. Not sure how worland has gotten away with so little damage except for the fact that there was a rubber mat underneath, although putting down a rubber mat can cause issues also because when moisture gets under them it gets trapped and won't dry out well.

In short, anything that just sits on top of the paint is eventually going to cause some type of rubbing and/or moisture trapping. Spray-in is the way to go.

Truck beds have been rusting since they were invented. With or without a plastic bedliner it will rust eventually. Bedliners here are only $100. So if you haul lots of crap it only makes sense to get a plastic bedliner. Bedliners protect against bed dents better than spray on liners and they don't use a wire brush and scour your bed before they put them in. Plus, when you sell your truck in ten years get another bedliner and the bed looks brand new. Total cost $200. If you go with the spray in you start off at $400. Then hopefully you don't dent the bed, or gouge it up or anything and you still spent $200 more than the bedliner guy who bought 2 bedliners.

Bedliners

I know of a new type of liner that protects your bed and has a corrosion protective built-in, also unlike any other products ( rhino, line-x, etc..) it comes in CLEAR so there is no difficulty matching your paint job. I have the clear in my gold 02 f150 and you can,t tell, i left the factory bed caps on.
