I just left mine in and cut a small hole in the rug to accommodate the pins. I did remove the tie downs and reinstall them over the rug. It took two people to do but the bed is more secure. I have had no problems with it and would not hesitate to buy another.

Don't they just screw in using Torx?

Go over to Home Depot and pick up a $5 multi-Torx tool (the kind that has multiple sizes). The screws should come right out. Then, just drop in the BedRug and re-install the tie-down hooks over the top. It's a little tricky finding where to poke holes through the BedRug for the screws, but not bad if you just take your time.

...........oops, just realized you were talking about the bed extender. I'm used to seeing questions about the tie-down hooks. However, I do still think it is Torx so should be the same concept.
