Second choice is a 2000-2003 or later 2V.

          Swap help please

Good truck 03 f150 4.6l 4r70w. Donor wrecked truck 97 5.4l e40d. 5.4 is dropped in bolted in place. Transmission is about 8 in longer, going to drill new holes into frame for crossmember bolts, best plan I've got at the moment. My question is in regards to ect and cht. Your notes state that you may have to tap crossover pipe on the 4.6l. Well mine is in reverse. My 4.6 does not have that in the crossover pipe or harness 5.4 does. I do however have a sensor threaded into a cylinder on both engines under the intake manifold that is in my 4.6 harness. Is this going to work and just leave cts without a plug on it? Also what am I going to to about the different tranny. I'm considering doing 98 percent of this swap and taking it to mechanic for the electrical stuff. The tranny pins are different. Some pins are used on one and not on the other. Change ecm?

Put the 4R70W back in. The E4OD uses a completely different PCM and wiring harness.

EDIT: If you are doing this swap just to have more power, don't bother. Your PI 4.6 has as much power as the non-PI 5.4. If your 4.6 is shot, that's a different story.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear lol the 4.6 blew a head gaskit and was worried how much premature wear has been going on until the gaskit finally blew. Found out those motors had shavings left on the block thru assembly and alot of them seeped oil thru gaskit around 40k miles. So ya was doing it for more power and junk the 4.6. This motor was no exception it's been seeping oil out passenger side onto exhaust manifold for the 6 yrs I've had the truck. What would I have to do to leave the 5.4 e40d in it

Trust me - keep the 4R70W. The 97 PCM is not compatible with an 03 truck. Your 03 PCM won't run an E4OD.

So leave converter alone and swap trannys? Never done this, just dropped engine along with tranny. The 5.4 wont damage the 4r70w?

After 1998, almost all 5.4's came with a 4R70W. Use the 4R70W torque converter.

Thanks man appreciate the info. I was headed down a dark and expensive path lol. So once I'm all hooked up I'll need to take it somewhere for a tune right? Everything is original except engine

What to do about coolant temp. I guess this 97 5.4 had both cht and cts because my 4.6 harness fits the cht but it also has the sensor in crossover pipe which my 4.6 did not have. Ok to just leave cts without a plug on it?

          Won’t start

It’s all connected cranks but won’t fire the only thing I didn’t do as recommended was use the 4.6 harness simply because it used a intake control valve that the 5.4 doesn’t have the connections looked the same but I’m not sure if the pu out is I used a 03 engine in my 02 would there be an issue with pinout I’m not sure

          Done!

Thanks for all the Info. Those notes was a lifesaver. Little bit of luck and research goes along way. The damn torque converter held me up from matting to the engine. Checked it like 5 times and it finally went in another half inch. Once that was good took her to muffler shop. Messed up royally with tranny fluid. Put valvoline dex/merc. No bueno.....flushed it out put the real deal in it and shes running fine. Just gotta tune it. Thanks again for the replies. Anyone with questions on 4.6 to 5.4 feel free to ask. I learned a few things with this swap

Can I use a 5.4 pcm so I can get all the power from the 5.4 motor

As long as it's the same transmission and truck year, it will have to be reprogrammed for your VIN. You can also get the 4.6 PCM custom tuned, that's actually better.

I'd start by contacting 5 Star or MPT Tuning. You will need to buy a programmer from them along with the tunes.
