Tranny type

adrianspeed:
I have an 03' F150 Supercab 2wd, 5.4ltr w/ class III tow package with 30k on the odo. I am about to do a tranny service and change to sythetic fluids (possibly Mobil1 or Redline) because I tow a 30' TT (approximately #5600) about 5k a year.

Due to the year (03') your list shows the 4R100 tranny that needs Mercon equivalent fluids, but my tranny dipstick say's Mercon V. How do I determine which tranny I have, and how do I find out capacities for same? Also, can I use the standard tranny service kit? THX! Nitrobob

Check the blue tag on the door jamb of the driver's door. Under TR will be either an E or a U. E means 4R100 and U means 4R70W.

The 4R100 used to require MERCON. Ford now says that MERCON V is compatible with this trans. I heard that they changed MERCON V to make it compatible.

The 4R70W uses MERCON V.

What about mine. It is a 1985 F-150 2 wheel drive with an inline six.
The gears go in this pattern:

1 3
2 4 R

All I see are these for the four speed manuals:

1 2
3 4 R

If it helps It is super low geared. Im not shure if it's a low geard tranny, or a low geard rear end. But there's no "L" on the shift know indicating that is has granny low. I can take off in 2nd though.

Doh! You found a misprint! Thanks, I'll fix ASAP.

I'd say you have the NP435 with the 300 motor. Check the side of the case and look for a NP gear logo.

Tranny Family Tree

Great sticky!!!
I'm familiar with the 60's trannys. (By the way, the C desigation represents the decade the tranny was designed in, C=60's. So the C6 was designed in 66, the C4 in 64. - The C5 is a French hunk of crud and should be avoided at all costs. The C desigation was given to make it sound stronger than it is.) Before these we had the FMX tranny, good but strange.
So my question is what is the tranny family tree here? The E40D is a C6 with an overdrive added to the front of the tranny? The E4R70, 75, 100, etc, all from the same tranny with different internals? Is the 4R100 a better version of the E40D? Is the 5R110 a 4R100 with an extra gear?
Thanks in advance.

Great info sycorex, I'll work that in!

C6 -> E4OD -> 4R100
AOD -> AOD-E -> 4R70w -> 4R75e
And I believe I read on here somewhere that the 5R110 came from the five speed ranger units somehow.

heres a question.

WHY is the so much DRIVETRAIN loss in the 4R75E ??

28% lost from my crank to my wheels.. wth!..

another question. how much abuse can the 4R75E take? what i mean is if im constantly driving like a bat out of hell which would let lose first? the engine or the trans, taking into consideration that they both dont have any defects.

or how bout if im using the truck constantly at GCWR?

and my last question. when should the trans oil be changed? i keep going through my Scheduled Maintenance Guide and cant find where it says to change the trans oil for my 4R75E it just says to check the fluid level.

it isnt till the 150,000 mile interval that it says to change transmission fluid but it doesnt list a spicific tranny. soooo

jeez they dont even ask you to inspect the PCV valve on the 5.4 till 150,000 miles..

Can I use Mercon V?

Noob here, all I can say is great info. I drive a 97 F150 4.6 4r70w auto with 194700miles on the clock and my tranny takes mercon according tho the dipstick and owners manual. It's coming close for me to do a filter change and have heard that ford is phasing out the Mercon fluid. What I would like to know is, is it safe to replace the tranny fluid w/ mercon V? What are the chances of the tranny blowing up on me? For what I know is the tranny has had Mercon all it's life.

thanks Jason

Yes, mercon V was origionally made to put into the 4R70w in '98ish to prevent failure of '94-'97 trannys that came with Mercon from the factory.

Uber dude, I can't help ya on that tranny as I don't have the newer "fluff" trucks. heh heh. I'd go with 30k for the fluid flush just like every other automatic requires.

There is a TSB out that states that Mercon will no longer be produced and that they will stop using it. Any 97-03 F-150 that called for Mercon is to use Mercon V or the dual labeled bottles Mercon/Mercon V

thanks anyway Adrianspeeder

i musta read and reread the service guide 30 times.

and the only time it makes a "general" reference to changing the fluid in my tranny is at 150,000 miles

and it states " Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid and filter (except CVT; Filter not required on CD4E).

other wise on the 30k interval marker it states

Change Automatic transmission fluid on vehicles equipped with the Torqueshift and 4R100 transmissions. Replace the remote filter element on the vehicles equipped with the Torqueshift transmission. Inspect automatic transmission/transaxle fluid level on all other vehicles, if equiped with dipstick. Consult your dealer for your particular requirements.

this is what it states to do every 30k miles.. all the way up 150k ..

could they have made the guide any more cryptic

Thanks JMC, I never saw that TSB even on another site. One final question, when I have the tranny flushed should the filter also be replaced, or do I wait? The reason I ask is because I did a filter change at about 170000 and now have 194800 on the truck.

Any time I do an oil change, engine, trannny, whatever, if it has a filter I change it.
