Speeder, I don't know if you have posted it (I didn't see it) but my 98 Navigator has the E40D tranny in it. And might I say, these things will take a beating beyond any tranny (auto) I have ever had. I have toasted several AOD's, AODE's, and A4LD's in my time, but I have yet to destroy this E40D even when I ran it 6 quarts low on fluid. E40D FOREVER!

Quoting myself... I know.

Did an oil change over the weekend and while I was under there, I had my wife bump the starter a few times while I watched through the inspection hole. Sure enough, there was the drain plug. (I marked the crank pully with a dot of white paint so I can find it again later.)

BTW, Thanks for the ID info and pic, guys. I do, indeed, have the 4R70W.

C5 was the first ford transmission to have lockup it was centrifugally operated and did not work. The aod had something similar to lockup it had direct drive in 3rd and 4th gears. Again another one of the systems that was more trouble than it was worth. The e40d was next in line to have lockup and that is a good system however it did take some refining through the years. The 4r100 and 5r110 are based on the same transmission and operate the same. The 4r70w and 4r75 both have lockup as well.

I just realized that 300 was on the 4r70w list. I have worked on alot of these trucks and have yet to ever see that. Didn't the 300 have a different bellhousing? It seems to me like it did and the 4r70w was never offered with any bellhousings besides the 5.0/4.2 and the 4.6/5.4. Every 300 I have ever seen either had a c6 or an e40d.

Now I'm confused as hell , I can't remember why exactly , but I have been under the impression that I had the 4R70W for years - My door jam sticker reads -

WB/BRK/INT TR/TP PS
139- B- M2- ---

R/AXLE/TR/SPR
9- H9- E- 8N-

MANU. DATE - 07 98

I didn't see this one mentioned in the thread anywear - So I have the 4R100 ? or were those in the 99's on up as stated . I need a new one and just came pretty close to purchasing a remaned 4R70W - Glad I took a look at that sticker - and this sticky.........1998 F150 S-Cab, 4x4, 5.4L

The 300 shares the windsor pattern 289, 302, 351w, ect. I havent seen the combo personally, but from 94 to 96 both the 4R70w and 300 were available for sure in the F150. Together? I donno.

jbrew,

I've got a 97 F150 with a trans code E. My trucks manufacture date is 3/97.

It's an E4OD from everything I've been told and seen. I think I posted a pic of the pan on page 2 or something...

Mitch

Thanx Mitch!! I'm pretty sure I have the 4R100, although the possibility exists that I don't. I 've been informed that the difference between E40D and 4R100 is that the E40D's bell housing will not line up with the modular series motors - 4.2,4.6, 5.4's. I count 20 bolts on the pan here - How many on your E40D? What motor due you have in the 97?

Ok, I'm a noob. In fact, just got my first F150 this afternoon. It's a 2004 Super Cab automatic. I'm really quite pissed with the salesman. He said it was a 4x4 and I believed him rather than checking myself. I'm wondering how much it would cost to upgrade to a 4x4? Is it even worth it, or should I just trade it in for a different truck?

If he misrepresented the truck, then take it back!
