Howdy and welcome! You have what I believe to be the TOD. (toploader overdrive)

I've only seen postings of 5 ever. From what I gather it was a crappy tranny from 84-87. It would be real handy for this thread and you would be a supercool noob in my opinion if you could get some pics of your tranny/shifter/transfer case linkage (if'n your 4x4).

Thanks. Will work on getting some pics together. I can't say that my tranny is junk however because about two years ago when she came apart.( my fault-should have fixed the leak that caused the lack of lube failure) I bought a donor 2wd truck with the same tranny and made one good box out of two. Except for the hole in the case that the countershaft made and the broken headshaft gear, mine was still in good shape. The donor had about the same milage. She has been happily running along ever since.

Found some interesting pics of a '93 F-150 owned by triple87 on FSB with an interesting tranny option...

Adrian,

Great posting. Thanks for all your research.

I just got my truck, a '99 4x4 with the 5.4 and tow package, but I don't find any door jamb stickers to indicate the trans type by code. (No stickers at all, actually). The dipstick does say "Mercon V." This and your comment that the R4100w is not common in my configuration has me leaning toward assuming it's the 4R70w, but then again, Ford's been known to screw up the dipstick markings before (a'la Escape). Do you know how I can tell by perhaps crawling underneath and looking, or is it all internal differences?

Sorry if this has been covered a million times before, but this thread seems to be the most definitive on the subject. Thanks.

Andy

Andy,

Here is a pic of an E4OD/4R100 trans pan. If yours is not like this, then it's the 4R70. The trans dipstick calls for 'Mercon'.

Howdy and welcome Andy! You just gave me a great idea to add one more identifier to the info list, pan shapes/bolts! The E4OD/4R100 has 20 pan bolts, and the 4R70w/4R75e has 14.

This post has great information, but sad to say, I am even more confused. I have a '96 F150 and the trans code is U. The pan has 14 bolts, therefore I would think it is a 4R70W. Here's the confusion - it says in this post that the 4R70W takes Mercon V, but the yellow plastic top of my dipstick says just Mercon. The dipstick itself doesn't say anything..other than the Ford part number.

I'm not much of a mechanic, so forgive me if I am missing something.
Great post.

From '94 till '98ish Ford filled the 4R70w's with Mercon. Then they finally figured out why some were burnin up and invented Mercon V which has friction modifiers to keep the 70 happy.

Adrianspeeder,
Thanks for the information.
One more question - When I popped off the rubber plug under the torque converter and slowly turned the engine by hand, I could not find a drain plug. How am I supposed to drain the converter?

Thanks again

FWIW, I talked with Gregg at Factory Tech about getting their separator plate. He told me my '99's TC may not have a drain plug in it. He said if so, I'd want to take it to have it flushed. Don't know if this is the only year that might be affected or not.

Trans code on your door jam sticker.

Hmmm, should be there I'd think. Was yours ever rebuilt and a 01+ TC used?

C series trans question...

I have a bit of an odd question. I know of the C4, C5, and C6. They are all 3-speeds w/o OD, but what is the difference between the three. I know the C6 is heavy duty, and was found in most trucks, and stuff, but what does that leave the C4, and C5 for? What kind of applications were they used in, and for which years? Were they heavy or light duty? And what is the overall difference in the three? I've heard of them, but dont really hear much of the C4 and C5 trans, so I dont know a whole lot about them, and it kind of peaked my intrest...lol

-Thanks
