2012 F150 Removable IPAD build..
2012 F150 Removable IPAD build..
Had a couple members asking for some more info on my ipad build.. so here goes. I originally designed it to be permanently mmounted in the dash.. then after thinking about the constant heat on it and me having to work in some bad areas pretty often, i decided to make it removable.
Heres some pics on how i modified the Scosche Double Din dash kit

In order for the ipad to fit, you have to notch out the AC control module.. the AC module is the foundation for this whole build

after the notch, the ipad fits in like a charm!

you do have to remove the top two mouning tabs, and the middle two.
Time to start laying in the pieces of abs.. just take off little by little until you have a good fit

When you get the good fit, glue the pieces in

Off to body work. The less bondo, the better!

The test fit.. you do have to notch out pieces of your dash..

Primer..

After paint, annd fitting in my modified sync piece..

Took a piece of sheet metal and bent it to screw onto the ac module.. this is the back support for the ipad, which i then sueded to give a cool background for when the ipad is not in

Turned the factory radio on it's face in order to gain the clearance, and extended the wire harness for my relocated hazard/traction buttons

Fitting it all back in.. since its designed to unlatch and swing forward, i had to notch out my freshly painted side trims
but in the end it still looks pretty good.

This is why i had to cut out the side trims and add the "ears" on my dash piece.. the 90 degree pass through and wires need room to come through, i just did it on both sides to keep it even.

after mounting it, the finished product

Thanks bro! and yeah, the top of the dash piece is push to open, so u push to unlatch, the ipad pops up and unplug it, then push to close.. literally takes seconds to do!

Im actually working on one now from an f150forum.com member. the one in my truck takes wayyy too much modification of the truck itself, so i designed another one for him. Basically the new design involves removing the mat from the top of the dash piece, and when u push the ipad down, it springs up so u can grab it. This is a wireless set up designed to be used via bluetooth stream, so theres no istreamer to buy or hardwired power source to worry about.
Thanks bro! I never record while im working since its just me and i need my hands ha heres one i did on how the ipad works
