From my expierence with the broken chain guide after the ford phaser change before I bought the truck, and for peice of mind just remove the fan, rad, ps pump, front cover, and change the guides, tensioners and cam phasers. This is providing you have good oil pressure and the rest of the motor is in good shape. 306000 kms now and runs good. Still a little noise but I never changed the tensioners. If I ever need to do this to another truck I will also change the tensioners.

Not to bring up an old post Steve. I have no problems buying the timing tool required, or renting it from you. I however am looking at 289 bucks A PIECE for the cam phaser kit from the dealership. I have found a website called tascaautoparts that puts out a kit for the phasers for much cheaper, however listed are several kits, and I am unsure if its even the right one. I was wondering if you could verify...

You have to pull the front timing cover and lock the cams to do the tensioners... you might as well do it all at once (you won't need the timing wedge, just some vice grips and extra hands to keep the cams from shifting) if you're going to do that. Lash adjusters require a 3-valve specific valve spring compressor tool.

You can get a 303-1039 3V Valve Spring Compressor or 303-1175 Timing Chain Locking Wedge from http://www.shopfreedomracing.com/3V-...-Tools_c11.htm as well. You can even rent them.

Not sure if the OP wants to add this to the first post or not, but here's some good news...
Freedom Racing Tool and Die now offers cam phaser replacement kits which include the cam phaser, cam phaser bolt, valve cover gasket, and timing chain locking wedge tool with free shipping. The kits can be found here and here.

I paid $169 for the cam phaser kit, from Joe Charles @ Gene Evans Ford. Gaskets are another $12 a piece. I'm thinking of doing a loan-out on my timing wedge, maybe do a deposit system via paypal or something for people that are about to theirs, otherwise it's just going to collect dust on my shelf next to all the other one-time use specialty tools I've collected.

Steve, u put the marks on the chain - cam and phaser is that correct position or do u have to find the R and two copper links and line it up, and how do u know if the cam phaser is bad.
i keep getting the p0345/p0349 codes and changed the cam sensor too, clear the codes, codes comes back as soon as i start the engine. i am thinking to do the cam phaser job, dont know if that would solve the check engine light. thank you for any help you can provide. i did a oil change and it was very bad thick, like if it was never changed. 2005 fx4. thanks
