Sand them. Without the sanding it wont stick as well. Also, make sure to use tons of polish. You really want them to shine: after you polish them they will look shiny for like a day, then it will fade away as it dries. Therefore, put lots of polish on. If you are doing stock lights, make sure to spray outer edges more since the red reflector is right on the sides. (more red on the sides than the middle). You will end up with the light looking like mine, which in the sun, doesnt look too good. What else? I suggest not to spray the backup light. I like the clear to black look. Makes the light look classier. Put paint thinner on before you start to spray. Gets rid of oil.

I did my third brake lens a while back and it looked pretty good for the little money and time spent...

But...after a nice Chicago winter and about 10 times through the turtle wax car wash it looked like I never even tinted it...

after reading this thread more and watching the videos I tried it again useing different steps...
to sum it
-1000 wet to start
-thinner and prep wipe
-3 coats of night shades, 5 min apart
-3 coats of clear high gloss, 10 min apart
-2000 wet
-polish w/3m rubbing compound to remove orange peel
-polish w/meguiars plastx

again...not body shop quality..but for $25 looks good...

my mistake the fist time was to sand after each coat of clear...

just hope it lasts...I hate the look of the stock light on my black truck!!!

 

ok guys i did it! thing was i didnt sand or sand the lights they came out good. the only thing was i touched them a little early. i got finger prints and i also smeared the edge and one came out darker then the other FML. do vyou guys know how i could fix these little things. i'll post pics in a bit!

 

 

those came out pretty good. probly just a light sand and hit it with clear coat and polish it back up on the darker one to lighten it up.

as for finger prints just polish the **** out of it,.

 

thanks but i did polish the hell out of the one with the finger print but its like a actual finger print. like its ridged and every thing. and the corner is like it rubbed against something so i guess sand it down and re-spray???

 

that or LIGHTLY sand the fingerprint down a bit.

 

I have been undecided as to what to get for new tails, but after seeing this post I will be doing this to mine. Only problem I have, I live in Canada and not hot enough right now to paint them outside lol. Guess I will be doing it next summer or use someones garage, I will be doing the 3rd brakelight as well.
By the way the trucks look great.

 

if your going to use sones garage, make sure you give them plenty of time to dry. i brought mine inside it was very windy and humid out side. and i touched mine a little to early thats how i got my finger print in the paint. so just be sure to give plenty if time to dry you should be fine!

 

I sprayed mine in the bathroom...if you don't mind a little cancer in the lungs go for it...I however would NEVER do the clear coat inside again...had to open all the windows.

Now I have a house vs the apartment so all is well. Good looking lights guys.

Fingerprints you will have to wetsand to the layer they are in when you touched them. You may have to spray some niteshades again depending on how much of the niteshades is taken off to remove the fingerprint, then re-clear and re-polish to get them perfect.

 

Ok I painted my lights down to the tee and it looked jacked up!!! So with out thinking about it I sprayed one light with paint remover and really jacked it up!!! The paint did not come off and took me like 3 hours of sanding to get most of it out. Problem is I have a light that is all foggy and some paint stuck on it still. What do I do to smooth it out? The other light i got the paint off with rubbing alchohol and a t shirt. Help!!!

 

Thanks LARABOY I will take your advice. Definately won't paint them it in the bathroom,. I remembered that I have a friend that has a paint shop, maybe he will give me a corner to work in and clear coat them after I am done.
