cheapest "paintable" bumper or cover?
cheapest "paintable" bumper or cover?
Does anybody know where I can find a really cheap paintable front bumper for a 99' F-150 XLT?
I have the three piece bumper, with a black plastic top, chrome middle and black plastic lower. The paint shop that is prepping my used tailgate (my original got stolen) is waiting on me to decide what to do about my bumpers before they start painting. I want to have the entire front bumper and the chrome portion on the back bumper painted the same color as the body (dark wedgewood blue). However, the paint shop said they could make the paint "stick" to the chrome portion, but cannot to the plastic portion becasue of the texture (bumps), they said that sanding will not help. They said they could paint it and it would look great until I drove it on the highway or went to a car wash!
I wanted to find a used front lightning bumper, but even used, they are going for $300 to $600. while a new one is about $400. A bumper cover is $300 to $500. Also, I can not find a cover that is molded to fit my stock bumper. I have tried fordparts, Karcraft, westwings, and many others.
If anyone know of a source please let me know. I can even pay a small finders fee if you can help. You can email me at jason5761@yahoo.com Thank you

you wont...
Your going to have a real time finding a cover for under 300 no matter what. You may luck out and find a used one on this web site but in general people dont re-sell front pieces. They usually get damaged or they leave the part on when they sell their truck.
My cover was 320$ shipped to my door. Finding someone to paint it is nearly impossible though. If you do buy one stay away from urethane covers. I still havent found anyone to paint it. They gave me the same crap about the plastic but they are way wrong. I have seen all the plastic sanded and painted just fine.
I sanded and painted my interior plastic which have some tuff textures to get out on a few of them. They came out great and thats with spray enamel from wal-mart. wtf , ya know?

PennyWise 88,
Thanks for the response. Originally, I was going to paint my existing front bumper. However, I thought, since the paint shop has to mix the paint for my tailgate to match the rest of the exterior, I would just have them do it.
Today, I found a Ford Dealership that has a lightning bumper cover new and they are going to sell it to me for 261.00 plus tax. I think I have to get the inner and outer brackets as well? Anyway, I pick it up tomorrow morning.
But hey, you painted your interior plastic parts? What about the dash? I have a tan dash that I want black. How does the Sun/heat affect the paint job? Is it durable? Thanks.

peh559,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to provide that info. That air dam looks dam fine! ha!
For some reason I never thought about just getting the lower piece and having the rest painted...dam*!
This morning I went to the Ford dealership that "said" they would sell me the actual Lighting bumper cover (99' and up can use the same bumper) for $261.00 plus the cost of the brackets.
This morning, I took off from work and drove 60 miles to find out that ...... they made an "error"! The $261.00 was for the actual middle portion stock bumper like the one I already have!
I knew this was a raw deal, but since I was there, I went ahead and got the actual lightning bumper cover and the brackets for.................a freak'in $473.00!!!!!!!!!!! Thats with no lights and no lower grill!
The only good news is that the paint shop is going to charge me only $35 to paint both headlight covers (with 4 clear circle areas).
Thanks.
